In a study of Norwegian teens, scoring high on a measure of video game “addiction” was linked to depression, but time spent on games was not.
Addiction to video games can be related to depression but not time spent playing those games.

One study found that teens with attention problems were more likely to go on to develop unhealthy gaming habits. 1
Why do video games make people focused compared to other tasks?
Scientists have evidence that virtual violence can trigger aggressive thoughts and anti-social behaviour, but most reject the idea that gaming can turn otherwise balanced individuals into killers.
This is interesting because I understand that violent games can cause aggression, I've seen myself enacting aggression while playing games. sometimes I get frustrated if I'm losing multiple times in a row but this didn't persuade me or give me ideas of killing. I am able to know the difference between virtual games and reality. It'll be interesting to research cases relating to violent games and violent actions.
A growing body of research is showing the flip side, though – video games can help people see better, learn more quickly, develop greater mental focus, become more spatially aware, estimate more accurately, and multitask more effectively. Some video games can even make young people more empathetic, helpful and sharing
Do video games actually help you see better? I have doubts about this because a lot of video games especially first-person shooter games have flashing screens while you play, replicating real life. For example, in The game call of duty, if you get hit with a grenade you see your screen flashing as you die in the game. As a gamer with biases, I can't see how bright moving screens are good for your eyes. Might have to research this.
Gamers and non-gamers were equally able to focus their attention on the target sequences, but the gamers performed better and had quicker reaction times. "The big difference was action video gamers are better at ignoring irrelevant, distracting visual information, and so made better decisions," she says.
DO goal-oriented games result in quicker response times? In action games, there's a mission or you have to survive and be the last one standing.
We have had a team of 12, including some of the best game designers in the country, working on these games for a year,” he says. “I believe you can have fun and have beneficial effects at the same time."
I think it'll be hard to create a game that's fun and beneficial because most gaming companies' main priority is to entertain and that's what we're used to. The majority of us don't look at video games for their benefits but rather for their enjoyment.
What we now know is that across cultures and age groups computer games can either cause problems or be beneficial, depending on its content."
I agree, it's the reason you play video games that determines if it's good or bad. If you play first-person shooter games to relieve your anger that can cause even more anger.
What we are finding is that pro-social games affect children's sense of empathy,"
what are other benefits of pro-social video games?
"I think we are starting to move beyond this inappropriately simplistic idea to see games can be powerful teachers that we can harness."
I agree, different types of video games don't have the same effects.
In research published in 2003, they used a series of visual puzzles to demonstrate that individuals who played action games at least four days per week for a minimum of one hour per day were better than non-gamers at rapidly processing complex information, estimating numbers of objects, controlling where their attention was focused spatially, and switching rapidly between tasks.
This research suggests that playing action games can result in rapid processing of information, precise estimations, and controlled focus.
Her team has also shown that action gamers may have stronger vision. They can better distinguish between different shades of grey, called contrast sensitivity,
What is contrast sensitivity? Contrast sensitivity is the ability to see sharp and clear outlines of small objects Contrast sensitivity is a very important measure of visual function, especially in situations of low light, fog or glare, when the contrast between objects and their background often is reduced, ( MACUHEALTH). So video games don't necessarily help improve vision such as eyesight but they may help you be able to differentiate colors, contrasts, shapes, etc.
Bavelier and Green asked non-gamers to play the first-person shooter game Medal of Honor for one hour a day for 10 days, and found their ability to focus on environmental cues improved much more than those in a control group who played the classic puzzle game Tetris.
This is fascinating, action games correlate to better focus?
"We need to be far more nuanced when we talk about the effects of video games."
I agree because the negative and positive effects are evenly balanced in my sense. Video games are a broad topic so Categorizing all video games as solely good or bad isn't accurate.
Adam Lanza, who on 14 December 2012 fatally shot his mother, before killing 20 children and six teachers at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, and turning his assault rifle on himself.
I heard about the sandy hook massacre but didn't realize the suspect was only 14. Does law enforcement think video games played a part in this?
