    1. As cases continue to spike, officials are warning that hospitals, which now hold a record of nearly 115,000 Covid-19 patients, could soon be overwhelmed. More than a third of Americans live in areas where hospitals are running critically short of intensive care beds, federal data show.

The issue with people who live in rural areas is a very critical one.

    1. President Trump mounted an explicit defense of the Confederate flag on Monday

Continued debate about the use of the terms "racist" and "race-based," both in the headline of this article and also in the article itself. Later, Ms. Haberman writes, "Trump has increasingly used racist language and references to portray himself as a protector of the history of the American South."

    1. While Trump has only the most rudimentary knowledge of the Bible, he often echoes Peale’s core lesson: that happy thoughts and cheerful chatter are the key to success.

Very interesting point to attach Trump to a certain strand of Protestantism — the idea of positive thinking.

    1. One of the things I've done in my work is kind of show the hypocrisy of progressive people who say they believe in inequality, but when it comes to their individual choices about where they're going to live and where they're going to send their children, they make very different decisions

      This is spot on.

    1. In this time of upheaval and uncertainty, where things don’t make sense, reading is making a comeback.

Everyone was fine with dynamism, with things moving and changing, and with relativity, until all hell broke loose. Now we want predictability again, institutions, things that work. Reading is grounded, close to truth.

    1. Father Boyle hired Frank to work at a bakery he had set up to provide jobs to people trying to go straight. He also found a doctor to help remove his act of nihilistic rebellion from his face. The bakery was the first business in what is now Homeboy Industries, a non-profit which has since grown to be America’s largest gang-rehabilitation centre, offering employment and other services to hundreds of former gang members. Its free tattoo-removal service has become the organisation’s biggest claim to fame.

I am going to write something here as a test.

    1. Threaten mass deportations, registries of a religious minority, and the banning of refugees with particular religious beliefs.

      This is definitely happening.

    1. This is an overall page note sample.

    2. The jabs came during a whirlwind day on the campaign trail as a full slate of surrogates, including President Obama and Melania Trump, were dispatched to key swing states to make closing arguments for their candidates. Polls show a tightening contest, adding a sense of urgency to each campaign stop.

      This is a test annotation.

    1. There’s something going on beyond the laws in those 17 counties though, as the overall black turnout relative to 2012 among non-rogue counties only reached 91 percent by Monday.

      Just a test.

    1. The 4-0 win was too huge for any Giant to be aggravated, even Moore, who was an out away from no-hitting the Dodgers on Thursday night when rookie Corey Seager hit a clean but soft single to right, which Gorkys Hernandez had no chance to catch.

Just checking out more of Hypothes.is. Very impressed with what they're doing!

    1. “His meanspirited response, and trying to seize the political opportunity,” Mr. Hickenlooper said of Mr. Trump, was unfair to “the injured victims and their family members.”
    1. The night was a reunion. Two old friends who had drifted apart bumped into each other in the swirl of salsa and hip-hop beats on the dance floor. They apologized, hugged, made plans to have lunch the next day. As they got ready to leave, one of them joked about being so young, the span of years lying before them.
    2. The night was a getaway. A young woman fresh out of high school was on vacation with her cousin and close friend, dancing without a care. It was Latin night at the gay nightclub. She had suggested that the three come here and was so excited that she sprang onto a stage to dance as strangers tossed dollar bills her way.

    1. Hypothes.is is an open platform for the collaborative evaluation of knowledge. It combines sentence-level critique with community peer-review to provide commentary, references, and insight on top of news, blogs, scientific articles, books, terms of service, ballot initiatives, legislation and regulations, software code and more.

Interesting that Hypothes.is is using Annotator.

    1. Students might be asked first to simply identify rhetorical strategies (like ethos, pathos, and logos) using the tag feature in annotations created with Hypothesis.

One of the toughest challenges for the English teacher is helping students collect, organize, and then find solid "quotes" or textual analysis for an essay assignment.

Great idea. But that's a long course tag!

    3. The real pedagogical innovation of collaborative annotation, however, is that students are empowered as knowledge producers in their own right, so most of my suggested classroom annotation practices revolve around a variety of student-centered annotation activities in which they are the ones posing the questions and teachers are co-learners in the reading process

I agree with this approach. When teachers just ask questions that students answer, that seems like the traditional "reading questions" approach to teaching — which can be a handout.
