    1. FETTERED HEART, FREE SPIRIT—When one firmly fetters one's heart and keeps it prisoner, one can allow one's spirit many liberties: I said this once before But people do not believe it when I say so, unless they know it already.

      This is an interesting saying because it challenges the idea of the freedom that chains can ensue. You gain freedom from locking up your heart, that concept alone is enough to make a person question a lot of things and initial thoughts. What I think this phrase is trying to say is that allowing yourself to feel for everything and without control can cause you to imprison yourself. It is better to chain up your heart for certain situations because allowing emotions may actually make a situation worse. Having control of your heart allows you to be more free and open to other things without worrying about emotional repercussions.

For research, 1) sender speaks truth about the referent; 2) the addressee can accept or reject statements he hears; 3) referent expressed in statements is supposed to conform to actuality – which raises the problem of proof, which are supposedly resolved in 19th century criteria of verification and 20th century falsification.

      Here Lyotard is differentiating between the research game and the teaching game. The research game deals with validation of information and how it is accepted. Research brings up the facts and one can either accept them or reject based on their opinions and its credibility. This brings up the importance of settling what is correct and valid from what is wrong and invalid. The importance of research is to provide solid knowledge that can then be taught.

    1. The university also plays the role of retraining and continuing education, where knowledge will be served “a la carte” rather than “en bloc.”

      Here Lyotard is criticizing the university for only giving knowledge in pieces rather than in its entirety. The university main focus is to just reteach and only give a fraction of the knowledge that we may need or could want. Knowledge is being limited because it is not being explored to its full potential and cannot continue on its own because of restraints from university.

    1. knowledge has become the principle force of production

      Lyotard is acknowledging that knowledge is what makes us productive as a society. In order to be a well productive and developed society we need to have knowledge. Without it we wouldn't be as far as we are and in order to keep growing we need to continue to expand on our knowledge.
