    1. strange plants were basking in the sunshine

Hawthorne's description of the mansion are all dark sounding, yet whenever he describes the garden it is that of beauty and happiness. This is ironic in the fact that, although the plants are beautiful, we know that they are poisonous.

    2. The youth might have taken Baglioni's opinions with many grains of allowance, had he known that there was a professional warfare of long continuance between him and Doctor Rappaccini

Is Baglioni lying about Rappaccini? If there is a professional warfare going on between them, of course Baglioni would have nothing nice to say about the other scientist.

    3. grave objections to his professional character

This description of Doctor Rappaccini shows that he is certainly a brilliant scientist, however, it also seems that he might be unethical in his experiments and he must have killed people in some of his experiments?

    4. Doctor Rappaccini. But the Professor did not respond with so much cordiality as he had anticipated

Doctor Rappaccini must not be liked within the scientific community.

    1. magnificent plant that hung its purple gems beside the marble fountain, he placed a kind of mask over his mouth and nostrils, as if all this beauty did but conceal a deadlier malice

The description of the garden seems to fit with Hawthorne's use of contradictions thus far in the story. The flowers in the garden are beautiful but Giovanni is noticing the gardener's demeanor is almost frightful of the plants leading Giovanni to believe there is something wrong with the plants.

    2. ruin of a marble fountain in the centre, sculptured with rare art, but so wofully shattered

This is again setting up a tone of gloominess and desolation with the ruins of what once was a nice marble fountain.

    3. Lisabetta, who, won by the youth's remarkable beauty of person, was kindly endeavoring to give the chamber a habitable air

Lisabetta is trying to give the home, or chamber, a brighter feel rather than what is then assumed to be a gloomy atmosphere in the mansion. This seems to be setting up a mood for the mansion that they are in.

    1. And your neat mustache

Maybe she is speaking from her emotions as a child growing up with a German soldier. I would imagine children would feel unable to talk to and fear their father back in that day especially if he is part of the military.

    1. There interposed a Fly –

I think that the fly is brought up because it shows that we may have a grand idea of what happens when we die but instead it could be exactly the opposite of what we might think hence the fly buzzing around after she has passed away.

    2. With Blue – uncertain – stumbling Buzz – Between the light – and me – And then the Windows failed – and then I could not see to see

I'm not sure at all how to interpret the meaning of this stanza?

    3. For that last Onset – when the King Be witnessed – in the Room

The way that I view this particular part is that the narrator is waiting for the moment after death to see God (not necessarily a particular God) or the "King."
