Crazy fragmentation of the 28S rRNA has been observed outside of the animal kingdom. The algae Euglena gracilis splits its 28S into 13 (!!!) separate chunks, and mitoribosomes from several organisms also feature fragmented rRNAs. I don't think there's been much characterization of the translational fidelity, etc of these ribosomes; they might provide starting points for future engineering efforts in this direction. https://doi.org/10.1016/S0022-2836(05)80096-8
