    1. The group added: “Those who blame the victims of the fire obscure the reality that these deaths are an indictment of the policies and structures implemented at large by both governments.”

I agree, I feel as though they could have prevented this issue by treating the migrants properly. They should have given them access to water and not had them in an overcrowded cell.

    2. “The Biden administration’s increasingly aggressive posture on migration enforcement and deterrence first strategies at the border have pressured Mexican authorities to stem migration in an already overcrowded and under-resourced system resulting in fatal tragedies such as the one we witnessed last night,”

I cant imagine how other migrant centers must be.

    3. The couple said they’ve tried to apply for asylum online as part of the Biden administration’s new immigration program, but the cellphone app keeps crashing each time they try.

Though the app as a good idea, technology can crash, be slow and also not be accessible to all.

    4. Márquez said she is aware the Mexican government doesn’t want them in the streets asking residents for money. But she says authorities in the U.S. and Mexico don’t give her a choice.

When I was in Mexico, I saw so many people from young ages of 10 years old to elders working in the streets trying to make money for their family. I always found it shocking the difference of people asking for money in Mexico vs the United States. In the United States we see individuals out in the streets, and they have a sign that say that they need money. While in Mexico, people are working. You see people trying to sell fruit, cleaning cars, preforming on the streets, and many other tasks. I have never seen anyone with a sign asking for money.

    5. In order to qualify, people must apply using a cellphone application called CBP One to make an appointment at a port of entry before they try to enter the U.S. But some migrants have reported that the cellphone app has crashed repeatedly, leaving them stranded in Mexican border towns.

In many parts of South America, some individuals do not have the ability to own a cellphone. Therefore, though this does help individuals that do have one enter the US, it also denies others the opportunity to apply.

    6. In January, the Biden administration also created a new immigration plan that would allow 30,000 migrants per month from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela to enter the country and be able to work legally for up to two years.

      Why only these countries?

    7. emergency health order known as Title 42.

      What is Title 42?

According to Wikipedia, Title 42 expulsions are removals by the U.S. government of persons who have recently been in a country where a communicable disease was present.

    8. xpresses its willingness to assist in the investigation, to clarify these unfortunate events. This immigration authority will promptly monitor the evolution of the health status of those who are hospitalized and will provide full support to the families of the victims,” the statement said.

In order to investigate the case, I wish the agency would do something for the survivors as well. If it was the case that the migrants had no access to water and were forced in tight cell that had 68 people in it when it was meant for 50 people, then the people should get justice for mistreatment.

    9. But the Los Angeles Times, citing an anonymous Mexican federal official with knowledge of the case who spoke on the condition of anonymity, reported that the migrants’ protest was because 68 of them were crowded in a cell meant for 50 people and that they had no access to drinking water.

This statement goes against what the president stated. When it refers to the anonymous Mexican federal officer, I wonder if they were at the center or if it was just an officer studying the case.

    10. Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, sometimes referred to as AMLO, said the fire started when migrants at the detention center learned they were being deported and set fire to mattresses in protest.

What proof does the president have for making these claims? Due to his status, he has the power to make these statements and people will believe him, though we don't know if they are telling the truth.

    11. Reporters in Juárez shared on Twitter what they say is footage from inside the facility, showing men behind bars as smoke and flames fill the room and security staff appear to be running away.

I don't understand how someone could just run away from a situation like this and leave people to suffer.

    12. The couple said they were released because they had children with them and ordered to leave Juárez within 30 days. But they said their friend, who they identified as Orlando Maldonado, was traveling without his family and was held at the detention center overnight.

This makes me wonder if they also hold children who are alone. I also wonder how old Orlando Maldonado is and if he was under the age of 18, if they would have let him go our not.

    13. Mexico’s president said the fire started in the Ciudad Juárez center when migrants learned they would be deported and set fire to mattresses in protest. Twenty-nine injured migrants were sent to local hospitals.

I find it interesting that even before the article begins, it first has a statement from the president of Mexico about what happened at the Migrant Center and who was responsible for it.

    14. Fire at migrant center in Mexico near El Paso kills at least 39

When I first saw this headline, I got really emotional because my parents both immigrated to this country when they were in their early teen years. My grandmother was also sent to a Migrant center when she was first trying to reach New York. It made me think of all the innocent lives that were taken because I understand that some of the reasons for people trying to cross the border is just to have a better life for their family.

    1. a migrant “is a person, not a statistic, ... a child of God who must be treated with dignity, respect and love.”

I completely agree with this statement. Whenever I hear about topics that involve migrants, they are referred to as a statistic in a chart or just a nationality. Even the President of Mexico referred to these loved ones as "the dead from Central and South America".

    2. She and other migrants questioned the official account that the detainees were to blame for the fire, noting that when they were admitted to the center all of their belongings were confiscated.

That was one of my first thoughts. From previous knowledge, I learned that when people are sent to detention centers, the officers take all of their belongings. Therefore, I question how they could have started the fire without any belongs.

    3. “They were left to die!” one migrant shouted at authorities guarding the site.“Why do they treat us like dogs?” another asked.

Though these are both opinions from individuals, I completely agree with them. Coming from two immigrant parents I have heard multiple stories about their experiences and how awful they were treated. From stories I have been told, it overall seems that they are treated without any respect and overall, like animals because they trap people in cages and cells.

    4. Migrants advocates said the fire is further evidence that Mexico is not equipped to manage and care for the record number of people who have been stranded here while trying to reach the United States.

I do agree with this statement because there has been a number of reports that claim that the dentation centers have double the amount of people it's supposed to be hold, which leads to overcrowded cells and improper care for the individuals.

    5. A surveillance video clip shows flames spreading inside a locked cell as several men plead for help. At the end of the 32-second video, several immigration agents are seen strolling away as black smoke billows.

Its upsetting learning that the people who locked them in the cells did not help them get out when the fire was spreading inside the locked cells. Instead, the agents just walked away and left the people trapped. I honestly don't understand why people would not find it in their hearts to help out the people in need.

    6. A Mexican federal official with knowledge of the case who spoke on condition of anonymity offered a different explanation, saying the protest began because 68 men were packed into a cell meant for no more than 50 people — with no access to drinking water.

I find it crazy that the President of Mexico was accusing the people of starting the protest because "...migrants learned that they were going to be deported to their home countries...". But in reality, it was because 68 men were packed into a cell that was made to hold less than 50 people and because they didn't have any access to drinking water.

    7. probably

The word "probably stands out to me the most because its implying that he doesn't know what really happened, in other words he is making a guess, but yet he is spreading this claim and opinion about the situation.

    8. At least 40 migrants were killed and dozens more were injured Monday night when a fire broke out in an immigrant detention center in Mexico, just south of the U.S. border, authorities said Tuesday.

As a fellow Hispanic, it really broke my heart to hear that 40 innocent lives were taken away too soon.

    1. 22-year-old brother shoots, kills 21-year-old sister over a video game in Cincinnati

The title itself was so shocking because you wouldn't think that normally somebody would get into a fight so bad that cost an innocent life to be gone so soon due to a video game. Also, since its in my area it caught my attention as well.

    2. Deep down, I always knew Myshawn would hurt somebody because he was always so angry. But, I never thought he would take ‘Miss B’ away from us,” Ahmyah’s aunt, Dina Meece, informed.

He sounds like he was a very angry person and had been aggressive before, just by the way his own aunt described him as

    3. Ahmyah’s grandmother, Misty Wood, even said that he threatened to kill his sister before the shooting.

I wonder if he threatened to kill her because of the game or if they had a larger issue that has not talked about in the article that could have led to the action.

    4. CINCINNATI

I find it crazy that this information hasn't appeared on my social media platforms. I had to look up Google News and see what was trending. Since I go to Xavier and it's in Cincinnati, I would have expected for more people to talk about it since we are close to the location.
