Deep footings (e.g. pile) transmit the load from the superstructure to a much deeper level where the soil has much higher load carrying capacity. Two mechanisms are involved in the load carrying action of a pile; friction from the pile shaft and bearing resistance at the base of the pile. The pile material and construction technique used also effects the load carrying capacity of these deep footings.
