The river Thames became a much nicer river to be on after the London sewer system was constructed in 1868(http://www.bbc.co.uk/england/sevenwonders/london/sewers_mm/index.shtml). Prior to that raw sewage went directly into the River Thames making it smell awful and also making it harbor many deadly diseases. By today's standards the river was still not very clean, however it improved quite a bit after the sewer system was constructed.
