Players do not just play games; they mod them, engage in meta-play between games, and develop cultures around games.
This makes me think of next week's fanfic unit. Some people truly consume media versus passively watching.
which strategies are moreeffective, analyzing the game’s rules to see how they ramify into a player’sexperience, and designing a game by playtesting, modifying the rules, andplaytesting again, are all examples of how games naturally and powerfullylend themselves to systems literacy
This breakdown is literally no different than writing (literacy) you figure out which strategy or style to write, analyze the prompt, plan and write (design), editing (modifying), rewriting (playtesting again) -- I don't know why it's taken me so long to see how gaming and "traditional" literacy are practically identical.
Being able to successfully understand, navigate, modify, and design system
I appreciate that the current narrative is how to make these systems more accessible and accountable in terms of equality
Weak emphasis, hoping that concepts will develop through exposure
I am wondering what teaching with a weak emphasis looks like for various levels of ELLs.
Mass- institutionalized schooling is a relatively new thing in human history.
While one can argue, mass-institutionalized schooling has helped progress the world rapidly, I wonder how it has stunted the world as well. Primarily in terms of integrating and respecting elders with our learning. We are so eager to push seniors out of the learning experience when before mass-institutionalized schooling, they were our teachers showing us the way of our past.
we outlined the dramatic changes occurring in everyday life in the realms of work, citizenship, and identity.
I appreciate this because not only is it keeping themselves accountable but it is also keeping learning relevant. In education there are too many instances where it's the old way only with no reason as to why we still teach that / ability to change it to something new without great backlash. By starting with the basis of keeping things relevant, it helps build further movement.
digital tools and applications
During my undergrad we learned about various digital tools and apps but it was hard to integrate it in the classroom as my district at the time was extremely underfunded. Now I teach in an area where that is not an issue so I am excited to see how this experience goes!
