So far in 2018 more than 18,000 corals have been planted on to reefs, double that achieved annually five years ago. Around eight in 10 planted corals survive at least a year.
These amazing people are changing the game completely in the last few years.Having 8 out of 10 planted corals survive in the last year!
“This in itself is not a solution, it’s part of a suite of tools that can be used. If you’re not working on stressors from climate change down to coastal pollution, you may as well not be doing this work.”
Another great quote from someone who cares. He expresses that this isn't a solution but a tool. How well does this work?
“We’ve had pretty good results,” says Joseph Pollock, coral strategy director for the Caribbean division of the Nature Conservancy.
Backing up information with other articles shows this a reliable source.
Backed by funding from the federal government and concerned donors, the foundation now has around 700 trees arranged in seven nurseries along the reef system as far as Ernest Hemingway’s old haunt of Key West.
I never knew how much this effected other people, i was aware that this was an issue but i had no idea how many people were involved in helping make it better.
while around 300 coral genotypes across nine species must be sorted and tagged.
What is the process of tagging are these just tress that need to be cleaned or have other problems?
ttempting to stop the rot by creating coral “nurseries”
so devastated that the climate has gotten so bad to the point that ewe are nursing out plants and coral back to life.
“I’m not ready to give up,” says Levy. “No one wants these reefs to die on their watch, so I would rather do something then sit back and watch everything die.”
People are out there trying to make our planet a better place. We don't live underwater, we don't see this issue everyday when we wake up. People all around the world are dong these thins out of the kindness of their hearts because they truly believe in making the coral reefs a better place for all the craters who were here before us. This is so inspirational.
A constellation of marine life, such as trumpet fish, hog fish and trigger fish, flit between the trees
Because all the plants and coals are dying this doesn't give any of the fish or other animals places to live or even hide from predators.
“It just makes us go for the numbers – the more corals we get out there the more diverse it will be and the better chance something is going to survive past the continued stress.”
I love the determination to make our oceans a better place.
While some other projects are experimenting with heat-resistant corals that can cope with occasionally warming waters
This is great because unfortunately our planet is only getting hotter and the majority of plants and species cant handle these warm conditions.
Partnerships have formed to provide trees to places such as Jamaica and Colombia. A chartered fishing operation in Mexico is in talks to do the same.
People are truly trying to make a difference and i think that this is amazing!!!
100 corals had been successfully planted on the Great Barrier Reef,
This is great for the coral reefs, this means we are trying to help re build what we have in turn destroyed.
the primary genus of reef-building corals, has plummeted by 97%.
Does this mean that because this percentage is so high that it is extremely difficult to re grow or replenish coral.
Florida has the world’s third largest barrier reef, with nearly 1,400 species of plants and animals and 500 species of fish, but the reef is vanishing fast.
When reading an article i really like seeing the facts and numbers when it comes to statistics and being exact. and that exactly what this sentence does!
reef has disappeared over the past 250 years.
With in this paragraph the author expresses how nearly 1,400 species of plants and animals have suffered and are beginning to disappear. This is really effecting all of the ecosystems.
