This article talks about this girl named Maya's experience using Snapchat for an extended period of time. This led to the use of apps similar to facetune. Overtime she became more and more insecure of things she had originally never thought of. I think it is important to read articles and hear stories like this because it's happening to almost everyone online. You can have a lot of personal self confidence and still find yourself comparing to others.

    1. So you might find a safe space online to explore part of yourself that isn’t safe in public

Yes, social media can be good for certain reasons like finding a community of people. However, I feel like solely relying on social media to fix an issue like community isn't good. I feel this way because it can make you codependent and addicted to the apps or websites.

    1. Pyramid scheme. December 2023. Page Version ID: 1188350070. URL: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Pyramid_scheme&oldid=1188350070

Prior to reading this Wikipedia page about Pyramid Schemes I had a very scattered idea of what a pyramid scheme actually is. Now looking at the definition "a business model that promises payment for recruiting more workers..which inevitably you will run out people to recruit leading to lower wages". Is shein or fast fashion websites then also sort of participating in a pyramid scheme? Sometimes they have like"oh if you share this with 3 people you will get a prize" And then you always end up needing like 50 people instead of the original 3. Is this considered a form of a pyramid scheme or is it different because you would be recruiting consumers?

    1. When is it ok to not cite sources for content?

I think it's okay not to site sources on social media when you aren't gaining any monetary benefits or claiming something is your own work. For example I could post art work (graffiti) that I found around town. My post is simply for appreciation and I don't really need to shout out the artist because I'm not implying I did the work. An example of when you should cite your sources is when you are following someone's recipe and filming a TikTok. I guess you wouldn't even need to actually @ the author but at least imply it's not an original recipe.

    1. Mark Johanson. Can your boss read your work messages? BBC, February 2022. URL: https://www.bbc.com/worklife/article/20210813-are-your-work-messages-as-private-as-you-think (visited on 2023-12-06).

The article written by Mark Johanson discusses the boundaries that companies should be allowed to cross when it comes to work programs, communication, and privacy. Personally, I've never really thought of my job going through my account on our communication platform. However, I've always only said things I felt were appropriate.

    1. But while that is the proper security for storing passwords. So for example, Facebook stored millions of Instagram passwords in plain text [i8], meaning the passwords weren’t encrypted and anyone with access to the database could simply read everyone’s passwords. And Adobe encrypted their passwords improperly and then hackers leaked their password database of 153 million users [i9].

My question for this is there anything the social media user can actually do to prevent this? Obviously we all have the choice to use these apps but if we wanted to continue use while being more secure how would that look? Also what is the backlash companies like Facebook or Adobe receive when a data leak occurs?
