One example is the GBU-39/B precision strike system that Boeing sells to the IDF who uses it to colonize Palestine. And back in 1939, here on UW campus, the Kirsten Wind Tunnel tested the B-29. This is the plane that would go on to drop the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Modern tech companies like Microsoft and Amazon sell their cloud, AI, web, and other services to oppressive governments around the world that use their tech to do harm

Due to the incentive for innovation being profit, ultimately it will come eventually at the expense of the quality of the platform. The design of Tik Tok is specifically rigged to maximize the engagement of the user and that maximizes their profit but comes at the expense of that user's experience on the platform. I think that a similar thing has happened to Twitter, Instagram, and really all other social media platforms that make their money from engagement.

I would say that there is absolutely a breaking point as far as someones privileges to be amongst the public but to call it a point of no return is somewhat cruel. I believe that justice or reconciliation should be based on rehabilitation. There should always be a return offered if the problem is solved truly. This is only in the legal sense, in a personal sense no one owes you a second chance in that way accept maybe your parents.

Jimmy Kimmel on his show did a Halloween prank that resulted in the prank going viral and a lot of parents replicating the prank on their own children at home. Some people argue that the effects are really negative and traumatizing to the child but the author notes calling this type of prank a trauma betrays the true definition of a psychological trauma because there is no correcting of the wrong that the parent has done in the actual thing and in this prank the whole idea is you reveal to them at the end that all their candy is actually still there.

There are a lot of platforms out there that are not tropically designed for crowdsourcing but are really good for it. The ones that come to mind for me are venmo and zelle. These are both personal digital payment methods that offer almost identical services. I have seen many times people put out a mutual aid ask through their instagram story and have a venmo/zelle link or qr code so that people can scan it and support whatever cause. Though, I would be interested to hear either company's argument for why they are better than the other. As I see it they are the same.

After the Boston Marathon Bombings a subreddit was made to try to use crowdsourcing to find the bombers. The creator admits that it would have never worked. This place was for people to sift through photos to try to find the identity of the bombers by linking photos of them taken on the day to other photos on the internet. They did actually find one photo that the FBI had not found yet but besides that the whole project as pretty much a bust.

Yes several times I have reported posts for being in violation of platform rules. Usually posts that are hateful but I'll always get a response that the post was not in violation of the rules. I think thats because the posts used dogwhistles. Instead of saying "the holocaust didn't happen" they will say something like "could you bake 6 million cookies in 12 years?"

The leadership would push for flashy gains that betrayed a crucial misunderstanding that what makes Tumblr unique are the online communities it fosters. A few more acquisitions by companies that didn't fit the culture drove the price further and further down and a general lack of direction caused people to form a revolving door at the company leave it high and dry today with no future in sight.

Memes are a great way to get an insight into the culture of people but what is important is that it is those people making memes about themselves. Looking at memes made by black people that are poking fun or making references in black culture can be a great way to better understand black culture. What is problematic is white people making memes about black culture, because that is not coming from a place of deep understanding and critique but from prejudice. Its kinda like doing accents, if you as a white person do a impression of a marginalized group it better be really damn good or its gonna be racist. And if you can do a really good impression its likely that you are coming from a place of deep understanding of the culture because you have spent a lot of time with its people or something else.

This one specifically says please send a copy of this letter to 20 people. On the website you can open each iteration of the letter to see if it changes overtime.

Elon musk in this tweet is saying that algorithms are based off of your interactions so if you interact with things that make you upset then the algorithm will show you more of that. I think that he is right, which is the first time anyone has said that ever, people do enjoy getting riled up by things on social media. The thing that he fails to understand is that some people have a right to be angry and express that and because they cant stop themselves does not make them weaker.

I have had many people in my life that have come and gone with invisible disabilities like chronic pain and ra. It took time for me to learn and appreciate that all of them communicate about it. Some people are very straight up and will tell you what they want in the form of support. Consent is absolutely necessary in any form of support.

Conversion Therapy is the idea that one can change their sexual orientation or gender identity by receiving treatment. Though it has been proven that not only is it not effective at erasing someones identity but also extremely harmful to their well being. Leaving them vulnerable to depression, anxiety, drug use, homelessness, and suicide.

At the moment there are still a good amount of legal protections that restrict companies from being too flagrant with your privacy but over the lat few decades that has become more and more of a market is companies actually selling people's information. I also think that people don't like the idea of a company having all their information so maybe another thing stopping them is the public sentiment toward private companies doing these massive privacy violations. But there is a lot of money on the other side of that fence and more and more and more companies are deciding that they want to take that leap and violate privacy.

Facebook makes things called "shadow profiles" of people who don't even have Facebook accounts. An amalgamation of collected information that could be used to make a facebook account for someone immediately upon entering the app. Though, facebook ceo denies that is the purpose of the data. They track things like your browsing history and information from your friends who already have accounts. Als they say its for things like security, and there are some other app features that are improved with access to the data but don't need it.

Damn I did not know the kpop stans had our back like that. It's so messed up that they were encouraging vigilante justice like this during those protests. Very red scare "tell the government if you think your neighbor is a communist" type of reality where the govenmnet has their own group of loyalists amoungst the masses that are just a massive organized snitching operation. I believe that this has spawned a new type of influencer. Weather on the left or the right someone will go to the opposing side's protest or event either undercover or purposefully disruptively in order to get clips to post on their accounts. But this is a very good example of trolling for good, I would have rather the trolls uploaded something meaningful to the cause on mass but I guess thats part of the appeal of it is that its silly and unserious.

This wikipedia article talks about what a troll is online. Basically it is someone being intentionally inflammatory online. Another defining factor is that they often are off topic and insincere. Ultimately with the goal of getting a reaction out of someone or to manipulate. Trolling at the end of the day is in the eye of the beholder because you could believe that someone is making a really good point and the original poster could perceive that as trolling if they fail to see sincerity in the reply.

This does not work for anyone trying to maintain anonymity online because you have to put your name thats on your ID or something really close to it. This could remove an aspect of authenticity for these people because if they feel exposed online they may be less authentic because they fear the consequences of that authenticity due to it being linked to their real name. This does however work for people who believe that accountability is the way to get authenticity this works because it holds people accountable for things they post by having their name tied to it.

This was in the ancient mesipotamian culture and Ea-nasir was selling copper. They complained about the quality of the copper and the treatment they got from the delivery guy making it the oldest written complaint.

Cool that graffiti has kind of changed in a way where people will tag pretty much whatever just with their name when it used to be more informative. That informative part of street art I think it has been taken by flyers or posters that will have updates or messages. But more and more these days I am seeing explicitly politic graffiti around witch seems a bit closer to it's original use.

For relationship status I would make a user choose from a list of options being taken, complicated, single, and single (not seeking). This would include not only people who's relationship status is complicated meaning they are not in a committed relationship but have some kind of relationship that is extra-platonic that they want to inform their followers about. This would also account for folks who either do not desire non-platonic relationships, are in a transitionary period, or for whatever reason do not want to be approached or perceived non platonically. I guess something this system does not account for is polyamorous and or open relationships, as storing data in the list format would be quite limiting because relationships like that are hard to pin down. The list of options would have to be miles long to account for everyone's situations.

Couple reasons, one is that bots tend to be good for engagement if they are deployed in the right way. These companies make their money advertising so upping that engagement is exactly what they want. Another is that usually to make a bot you need to buy the rights to edit the code of the app unless the company's software is open sourced.

In this scenario I would let my parents live out the remainder of their lives. I have seen a family member go through the process of developing Alzheimer’s and its absolutely heartbreaking because you know the person you are speaking to but slowly that person begins to fade and there is really nothing you can do about it. But I always said to myself after seeing that that If It happens to me I don't want to have any extra care. I want to live out whatever time I have left doing what I love and being with the people that I love. If you institutionalize someone you rip that final opportunity of normalcy away.

I fundamentally disagree with this aspect. While "going with the flow" is a great way to not ruffle any feathers, it is also the best way to get complacent. I'll give a basic example. Do you think that the Civil Rights Act would have eventually been passed if Dr. King, Rosa Parks, or Malcolm X just "went with the flow". Was it wrong of Nelson Mandela to "force" the end of apartheid in South Africa? Every single advancement in the field of ethics and human rights has been made by someone unwilling to be satisfied with the status quo and "forcing" it to change. If we resign ourselves to what the world around us wants us to do then we would live in a society far bleaker than our own.
