    1. We sincerely hope that our students find our courses valuable in terms of the knowledge and insight gained. It has been our experience that this is most likely achieved when students focus more on mastery of content than on the final grad

      Purpose of the the chapter

    2. Another common explanation for silence is that someone has already said what we were thinking.

This is what I struggle with and I always think other will think I am stealing their idea (even though that's not true)

    3. Whether in assignments or in class participation and discussion, we must demonstrate understanding. Comprehension can be demonstrated in written, verbal, and active forms (such as presentations and projects).

Correct answers are a big part of this, but when a student shows demonstration and the work is correct but one number is mistaken, i think it shows growth and that means a student has learned

    4. n the same way that a fish cannot live without water, we cannot make sense of the world without the meaning-making system that our culture provides. Y

There are always many factors that are not seen, yet for some reason people believe they see everything, but they need to double think about everything in context

    5. Yet all knowledge is taught from a particular perspective; the power of dominant knowledge depends in large part on its presentation as neutral and universal

Perspective is a key component, but how can we ensure that we try not to be biased in perspective?

    6. First, colorblindness is not actually pos-sible—we do in fact see race and it does have social meaning and consequences. Second, people do not come in these colors and so claims about green, purple and polka-dotted people render race ridiculous and trivializes the realities of racism

I agree. We cannot say we are color blind because we do see the colors and acknowledging the colors is what makes society progress

    7. Focusing on exceptions or unanalyzed personal experiences prevents us from seeing the overall, societal patterns.

Exactly! It is hard but trying to come into a space and forgetting everything else can be helpful in certain situations

    8. In order to move beyond the level of previously held opinions, practice the following

I think being unbiased is the best way to learn because coming into a class with a bias already in place, it destroys the opportunity to learn and grow as a thinker

    9. The author said White people have privilege. I totally disagree with that because I know someone who didn’t get a job because he’s White!

      Affirmative action in work setting

    10. spend time critically thinking through difficult ideas with the support of others in order to deepen understanding and share insights.

Bouncing ideas off of each other in other to deepen understanding. Not meant to stay on surface level, but rather deeper discussions

    11. For the beginner, grappling with the concepts is the first step. To facilitate doing so, practice the following:

Steps that need to be taken in order to think deeper into the text and understand more

    12. Even if his peers did share his view, that would not make his argument valid. It is more likely that he would be seen as having some academic challenges, as somewhat immature, and perhaps even disrespectful. It may even be assumed that he might have trouble passing the class

I previously stated that having these emotions can cloud judgement and here is an example of how. He had good solid evidence to believe why there are 9 plants because he gathered it from sources he believed to be credible. However, he neglected to realize that scientist are above his credible list because of the amount of research that took place.

    13. Yet basing our knowledge on such sources as personal opinions, self-concepts, anecdotal evidence, hearsay, intuition, family teachings, popular platitudes, limited relationships, personal experiences, exceptions, and main-stream media is insufficient for understanding and responding constructively to social injustice

What we typically use to target inequalities, which are not bad, but the author is saying that we can go deeper into our own minds if we do what is listed below

    14. Therefore, our perspec-tives on issues like poverty and social inequality are necessarily lacking—and especially so if we ourselves are not poor

This is true because we can be empathetic, but won't be able to fully understand what someone is thinking because we have not been through that ourselves. The support is important, but we cannot fully understand

    15. White woman who lives in poverty. While she will face many class barriers, she will not face racism. Yet a poor White woman—while not facing racism—will face barriers related to her gender—sex-ism—that a poor White man will not.

Examples on different kinds of inequalities

    16. we may have a deeper personal un-derstanding of social inequality and how it works, but may not have the scholarly language to discuss it in an academic context.

Depends on how topics were brought up in school and around family members

    17. How to Engage Constructively in Courses3engagement challenging for many students, and this challenge is heightened when the topics under study are politically and emotionally charged. This leads to the second reason that courses that address social justice and inequality bring to the surface patterns and tensions that other courses do not: most of us have very strong feelings and opinions about the topics examined in social justice courses (such as racism, sexism, and homophobia).

People by affected by this can be dangerous because they can lead it to cloud judgement and sometimes people need to be in an unbiased opinion but it can be difficult.

    18. one right answer”

i agree with this because a lot of students only memorize something for the one test pr the one quiz, but then finals roll around it is like learning the concept all over again. Also it tends to be textbook answers, so when students arrive to college, a lot if expected when they did not have the proper learning in high school

I don't think media should do this, because although it would be nice, it makes everything black and white when that is not the case

Well...I think this is true for certain groups only, being a part of a marginalized group, I do not deflect by protecting my world view, I understand my obstacles and know that things are not going to be easy for me based on the my race. It is really biased for those more fortunate who have something to protect.
