    1. (not being ranked)

Try to avoid parenthetical insertion. This is a good quote, but our insertion here suggests it's flawed somehow. It is not. We should just set up the quote better, so that the pronoun we substituted out makes sense as it is:

Sophomore safety O.J. Burroughs said not being ranked just increases the Jayhawks' motivation. "We use it for fuel, so we know just to keep going. ..."

    2. With the offense scoring 27 touchdowns, good for third-best in the country. coupled with a defense with plenty of star power, the team is concentrating on getting better day by day.

This is a pretty complex sentence. There are three ideas here that could be three paragraphs. No need to cram it all into this sentence.

    3. for the first time since 2009 against Iowa State

The Iowa State part of this is not one of the criteria for being 5-0, but it reads as if it is. "Saturday against Iowa State, Kansas looks to win five games in a row for the first time since 2009."

    4. er, it

End sentences with periods, and in quotes, you can even be liberal with fragments for phrasing. "It brings us closer. It brings us up as a unit. And even the defense too because they have a part in this too. We know we want to keep it rolling each and every day on the field. And on Saturdays too, so we can have that confidence."
