CIPA, the Children Information Protection Act
This is an important component because a technology policy must address the legal laws governing the filtering of the Internet. This also gives support to the policy because it uses federal law as its supporter.
Staff members willexercise sound judgment and responsibility when giving students assignments using the Internet as a resource.
I like that the policy also addresses the need for the staff members to be mindful when designing activities that require students to use the technological resources.
apply to all PPSD administrators, faculty, staff, and students.
I appreciate that the policy clearly identifies its audience. It is not only the students but also the faculty, staff, and administration that use the same resources. I like that the policy holds all of them accountable.
Student personal information (including, but not limited to; names, phone numbers, addresses, etc.) will not be entered, transmitted, or posted over the internet for public use without prior written authorization by school administration
Students need to understand the risk of giving out personal information over the Internet and that is why, I am glad this technology policy addresses this issue.
All communications should be polite with appropriate language use.
This phrase brings in and addresses issues such as cyberbullying or online stalking. However, I find that it would be better to give some specific examples instead of presenting the somewhat arbitrary rule.
In general, electronic mail in personal accounts will not be inspected without the consent of the sender or a recipient, except as necessary to investigate a complaint.
Interesting. Although the policy states that it will not inspect, it is important to note that it can be inspected. They offer the privacy but it can easily be invaded.
Individual users are solely responsible for all charges and fees that they may incur in using the network, including outside telephone, printing, and merchandise purchases made through the network. The Providence School Department is not a part to such transactions and shall not for any costs or damages, whether direct or indirect, arising out of the network transactions by the user.
This is another important point because it frees the school administration from any transaction related to money.
full responsibility
This is nice. It clearly communicates that the user has the full responsibility.
taff and studentswill sign a form acknowledging they have read and understand the Internet
It is important to do this. Even if parents sign the permission forms, it's important for student and staff to take responsibility for appropriately using the technology. It also creates paper trail in the sense that if students violate the policy, then the signed document can be used to legally hold them accountable.
Parents
This is another important point. It is crucial to be clear about the need for parental permission before allowing students to use the Internet.
Staff and students will be instructed on the appropriate use of the internet.
This is an important component that I am glad the policy addresses. I like that the policy communicates the fact that students and staff will be taught how to properly use the technological resources instead of having to learn on their own.
The Providence School Board supports access by staff and students to rich educational resources available on the Internet. The use of the internet must be for educational and research activities and be consistent with the educational objectives of the Providence School Department.
I liked how the policy clearly articulates the mission of the technology policy. I also like how the mission is consistent with the mission of the school as a whole: to provide education.
