When and where else has darkness been dropped? This indicates it's not the first time. What truly is the darkness and where have we seen it before? Both in the poem and outside of it.

Observation: innocence is being drowned. Because of it being a ceremony it almost reminds me of baptism, especially with the other religious imagery.
