better but also enjoy the process, because the issue is real to you and your “intrinsic motivation
This reminds me of a breakup. Where you are given a problem and do not know how to deal with it then you start going on, doing better for yourself, learning how to be on your own again, and creating new mindsets with memories
1960s, Freire created “culture circles” which based the learning and practiceof reading and
Allowing your students to read and write on issues on their every day lives is helpful towards building their writing. They are able to go into depth and deposit how they feel about certain topics which develops a story
Be aware of where you want the viewer’s eyes to look.
This is important because the focal point is what will either catch the eye or steer the viewer away
When you are stuck, it often helps to look at examples of similar projects that other people have created for ideas.
This is true. I feel looking at other pieces of art is a boost for you to figure out your own style or creative ideas.
It is likely that just by being aware of elements and principles of design, you will be able to understand and communicate with visual media more creatively.
I learned that when observing different pictures, artifacts, and drawings that there is more than just paint or a craft. Many art forms represent stories, different eras, and how art has changed over time. Looking more at detail and elements within a design will help you visualize history
remind students that the teacher’s perspective isn’t the last word.
There are many different point of views but as individuals we must be open-minded
The latter doesn’t refer to a bundle of skills
The latter refers to the skills or knowledge a child acquires on their own in order to understand
Should we be doing thisat all? Do such standards make it easier or harder to create lessons where students’ questions are atthe center?
If students are given a standardized test with all the same questions, then it will be harder for the kids who don't understand the topic or reason for the test vs. the kids who get the gist of the test
Worse, those questions may then be ignored.
Sometimes when students ask questions, teachers don't answer them and move on with the class
Progressive education is defined by active and artful adultinvolvement,
If the teacher is involved in the subject along with the class then students will feel more comfortable to participate
better than asking subject-matter questions is the process of encouraging kids to come upwith the questions that matter to them.
Students should be able to ask any question that comes to mind
Every minute they’re forced to spend memorizing the definition of a word (“What doesnationalism mean?”) is a minute not spent wrestling with ideas (“What would the world be like ifthere were no countries?”)
It is hard for some students to learn a new topic right off the bat.
Grappling with meaty questions like these (which were among those generated by aclass in Plainview, NY) is a real project
Meaty questions re important to ask when you're reading a topic you don't know much about
Sometimes, in fact, no definitive rightanswer can be found at all.
Many people have different answers and different ways on how they found it
, if we’re still using tests (Kohn, 2015) rather than authentic assessments of theirunderstanding, we’re giving them a gift of meaningful questions with one hand only to take it awaywith the other
If teachers still provide tests that are based on a subject that a student doesn't understand, then that student is automatically going to fail even though the subject has a lot of important content
It’s important to “push beyond the factual,” s
It is important to go past the actual case and create your own ideas or interpretations to a certain subject
Of course one always thinks about something — learning isn’t content-free —but the ultimate goal isn’t mostly to acquire knowledge (which can always be looked up).
What we learn should be used for our current or future needs ( job skills, fixing a car, riding a bike). Instead of reading the content and keeping it in mind, the goal is to apply it towards any practice that we choose.
I am genuinely here to support you in your journey through this class and SFSU more generally; let me know how I can help!
I am happy to be in your class and cannot wait to develop my writing
Health is Wealth
This is super important. If you take care of yourself then you will achieve successful health
the labor-based grading contract and the classroom culture it supports requires participation and input from you.
It is important to do your work in order to maintain a high grade in the class. It is based off participation
am involving you in a movement for equity and fairness in Composition Studies, rejecting the traditional, subjective and sometimes oppressive ways that academic writing is graded in school.
The class is about open-mindedness instead of having a one-sided opinion
Investing in the ‘ethos’ or spirit of the course by collaborating on our Shared Values
It is important to understand other people's POV
involving you in your own self-discovery as well as teaching in this class
I'm excited to dig deeper and learn more about myself!
An important habit we will develop is reflection,
This is a very good way to grow as a writer and person. Reflections will remind or show you where you were at one point and how far you have come
I will still have the ‘final say’ in your course grade, you should know exactly what to expect for a B
In order to earn a B you must show up to class and work towards your full potential. As young adults we are to hold ourselves accountable of our own priorities and classes at SFSU. The teacher will grade you based on your work ethic.
