It is the process of telling a story about yourself that draws on the shared cultural story archetypes which creates and maintains a shared identity.
When I think of community I think about having shared identity like this quote suggests. That it is more about shared experiences than anything else.
The manifestations of this are that I take pride in showing people around the city. I feel slighted when people say horrible things about it. I feel at home whenever I hear a Geordie (Newcastle) accent (despite not having one myself). And so on.
Can people still be part of the community even if they aren't proud of it like the author is? I feel like even if you aren't proud of it what surrounds you really influences who you are.
It must be able to explain why “community” is different from other social groups — such as “society”, “family” or just a group of people.
I think this point is interesting. I believe that even a group of people can be your community or your family can be part of it since they create a sense of belonging.
You will never hear someone in this context say that “community” is a thing that can be ignored or should be feared. And you will, almost never, hear people say what they mean by “community”.
This is an interesting perspective that I have never heard before. I can see how community can be misused for bad. It kind of reminds me of how people fall into cults or bad leadership because they are lonely and promised the sense of community.
For Brenda, one of the purposes of the partnership was to help first-year composition students, many of whom are not native to Tucson, feel part of the local community in order to support college student retention.
As a college student, I can say that having smaller communities to be part of really does help with not feeling home sick. I like that even thought the college students are thought to be the "helpers" both groups can ebnefit from the program through the human connection.

Especially how the students described earlier of being afraid that they would be judged, it is good that they didn't look down on them and navigated the program well by helping the students while also treating them as equals and getting to know their partners better.
I think it is good that the writer recognized his own lack of knowledge because of her personal background. So he took the time to proper research while still respecting the history and the land.
I like that it gives background so you can see by the wide range of people that the interviews are not biased by having them all by extremely similar backgrounds.
It is important to always try to stay unbiased and open to other places. Trying to become more informed, rather than judging. Her personal stories showed the misunderstanding that people often can have others and other countries.
I think seeing more of this in the media would help greatly in understanding others.
I think in our own lives it is also important not let anything define you, especially one bad thing that happened to you. To try and look at everything that shaped you.
I could see how the stories can create this sub conscious image you have of someone or a group of people, caused by repeatedly hearing the same people described in a certain way, or doing the same thing over and over. I am glad that it has become more common to show diversity in careers.
I can see how this could be a common thought as an American since a lot of our media just pushes how poor Africa is. We don't see a lot of good media that actually teaches us about other cultures. I agree that having diversified reading would help with this.

I notice most of the questions are about the writer. I think that it is important to remind yourself of what the writer's goal might have been. I know often there can be multiple interpretations of the same reading, but I think focusing on the writer can help bring more clarity on the intent.
When you annotate a text, you should do more than simply underline or highlight important points to remember.
This is a good reminder. I often try to highlight what is important to me. Once I am completed almost half the page is highlighted and I didn't actually make progress in annotating. I think making sure to write is helpful, even though it can be more time consuming.
3. Reread the selection
I think this is what I find the most meaningful part of the process, repeating to read it. Sometimes it can take a few tries of reading something to fully grasp the meaning. It also helps me, since I am often a fast reader which can help bring more thought to what I am reading.

I agree with this statement. In the past year I made it a goal in 2026 to read more books. I started annotating and making sure that I was a more active reader and I did notice it improved my understanding of the book and helped provide more meaning to me.

I wish that I would have annotated sooner before writing my poem. Now I know to fix my formatting on my google doc.
Students should not write their assignments in another program (e.g., MicrosoftWord) and then copy and paste the content into Google Docs.
While I have been getting better at Word. I actually appreciate being able to write in Docs since it is much easier to use and share with other from my personal experience.
This includes writing generated using AI,including ChatGPT, Claude, Grammarly, Prezi, or any other “artificialintelligence” platform or LLM.
I understand the issues AI can cause. I am glad that I dug deeper into the syllabus because often I use Grammarly since an extension will occasionally pop up for it. But now I know not to.
Produce at least 30 pages of polished prose over 3 major projects.
I am slightly nervous for this because I have not written that much previously, especially multiple pages of writing for one assignment.
