    1. A line that stood out to me in this reading is one on the first page in the third paragraph. "Its ambitions, however, go beyond mere description." This is something that everyone struggles with in English class and what makes it harder but also more interesting. Whenever you read something, you understand every word on the paper most of the time. But there is an underlying meaning to everything in literature, which is what makes reading so interesting and inclusive. I also think that this is something that I have struggled with particularly in this class. I have always just looked at the words on the page and thought that was enough. Throughout this class, I have learned that the words on the page are only the beginning. Even one word can bring up a whole conversation on a specific topic. This sentence in this reading stood out to me because of those reasons.

    1. ice cream bucket

is there a reason why the family is using unconventional items to either get these trees out or plant other things? The girl was using a "rusted old dandelion fork" earlier in the page. Is this because of lack of money or just how they wanted to do it?

    2. Yet each seed had managed to sink the hasp of a root deep and a probing tendril outward.

I definitely think that this last sentence is a metaphor for how real life can work sometimes. Even though these treelets did not have to proper care they needed to grow, the seeds still came together with the root to grow together even through a rough time. This can happen with people in everyday life. A person can be in a depressive state or being mistreated by another person but they still find something to grab on to or think of to keep growing and improving as a person so they can get out of that state. Maybe this will come up later in the novel.

    1. ohn Jacob Astor,

While reading the beginning of this story, I was wondering why John Jacob Astor was being brought up multiple times. In the footnote, it says that he was one of the richest men during that time. Maybe he was mentioned to show the type of people who could show up to court during this time? The only reason I could see Astor relevant to the story is that he was a prominent figure during that time and Melville wanted us to see that.

    2. Scrivene

A scrivener (or scribe) was a person who could read and write or who wrote letters to court and legal documents. (wikipedia)

I have never heard of a scribe in a a court room used in this usage. I looked up the definition of this word right away when I saw it. This word in particular is our first impression of Bartleby. This is Bartleby's job and it will have some significance in the story.

    1. This story "Sticks" is a really sad life story to me. I see this as a mode of happiness for the father at the beginning of the story. As his kids are growing up and starting to get partners and move out of the house, the father gets sadder and expresses that in the pole decorations. The saddest part for me was when the author described the decoration for the pole when the mother died. It is always so heartbreaking hearing a persons spouse die before them. That is the ultimate grief. I also wish we learned more about the family history, especially the history of the father. This short story should be made into a novel. I feel like that would be extremely interesting.

    1. right of the people

this line is also important because every amendment is because it is for the people. James Madison made sure that this was put into the amendments because they didn't have all their rights when under British rule.

    2. to keep and bear arms

this particular part of the amendment is what is controversial in politics today. this wording can be interpreted in different ways that are drastic from each other. this part of the amendment is what most cases concerning gun laws refer back to.

    1. love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is notpuffed up

I particularly like this line because the emphasis is on why love is important. I feel like this is an important message for us today as we forget that love is in our lives sometimes. This was a good reminder of that. This 2016 text is definitely suited to the modern generation because we need a text like that in our lives. In the 1611 version, it talks more on charity and profiting your life for the Lord. In that time, that was something that was extremely relevant then. So there was the same message behind both texts, just the theme used for each was different for different generations.

    2. reioyseth not in iniquite: but reioyseth in ye trueth

this textual version of the Bible verse is probably how it was actually written. This is extremely old English, like even old for Shakespeare, so it is hard to read but the same message is still there. I chose to annotate this particular line because it is one of the hardest to read in old English, but it says something about truth which is what God is all about.

    1. I have everything I wanted

Even though this song is a haze and weird things are happening left and right not only in the lyrics but in the music video as well, this last line saying she has everything she wants is the good thing coming from it.

    2. don't remember what I'm seeing

This line confirms that this song is an omen to being in a haze. At the beginning of the music video, the singer gets high by hitting a bong which I thought alluded to her being high while writing this song or just being high during the song in the lyrics.

    3. They're gluing in roses on a flatbed

this line is pretty harsh in how she is describing the roses. I think this is because in the beginning lines she wanted to give off the vibe that the song will be lighthearted or a romance song, but this lines gives that first look into how this song is nothing like we thought it was going to be.

    1. If we manage to get this right, they’ll surrender by early light

These two lines in Washington's part are typical poem lines. There is an AB pattern, as right and light rhyme. Also, these two lines are Washington's plea for help to Hamilton.

    2. ragtag

the definition for ragtag pertaining to Merriam-Webster dictionary is "ragged, unkempt". This type of term is used a lot during the play of Hamilton describing the revolutionary army or Hamilton.

    3. Ev’ryone

The apostrophe in the middle of this word shows how the performer is rapping with those specific syllables. This also important to the flow of the song or just any poem in general, because if the "e" was in this word the whole rhythm would be off for the rest of the song/poem.

    1. And evening

Yeats is not only describing the day but also the night of Innisfree. This gives a 24 hour description of this island, as if he is convincing you to go by yourself to Innisfree as well.

    2. And live alone

It seems that Yeats want to go to Innisfree so he can have peace and quiet and intentionally be by himself. I think we can all relate to this in some way as at some point, we all want to just be by ourselves and relax.

    3. Innisfree,

This poem is about an actual island off the coast of Ireland. It is a very small island and it is also inhabited. I think that writing a poem about this special place not a lot of people know about is so fascinating. I am from Irish descent and I have never heard of this island before, so I am extremely interested to read these descriptions Yeats will give.

    1. Fair as the moon and joyful as the light:

This simile throughout the line perfectly describes what people think of when describing the moon or light. This poem is told from the eyes of an artist, and that is why I think each description or etymology of a word is accurate to what an audience would think of it.

    2. opal

Oxford Dictionary - An amorphous form of hydrated silica resembling chalcedony, often white or colourless ( common opal), but varying through blue-green and orange almost to black and valued in those forms showing colourful iridescence ( precious opal)

The origin of the world opal is "precious stone", which is a perfect word for the connotation of describing a queen. Both opal and ruby have an elegant sense to them and being a queen is all elegance.

    1. I won’t breathe until he lands,my brother, blackas an eighth note driftingagainst the sky

Is his brother in the army? He was describing through verbs, nouns, and adjectives in the past couple of stanzas how much of a dare devil his brother his. It seemed like it scared him a lot, so I think that is where these last couple of lines become important.

    2. acid bobsleddinghis veins,

bobsledding is the main verb but I find this part of the 2 lines fascinating. Such a unique way to talk about an adrenaline rush

    3. Terrance Hayes

Hayes is actually from South Carolina, which is so cool. He is an American poet and also an educator who has wrote 7 poem collections. His most famous collection is Lighthead, as it won a National Book Award.

    1. assèd

This word reminds me of when we talked about rhythm and rhyme in poems. This acute on the letter "e"makes us pronounce the word so it flows with the rest of the poem.

    2. Apollo's summer look

I really like how Keats incorporated Greek mythology when describing summer. I am fascinated with Greek mythology, so little references like that always catch my eye. The way that this line is written also brings a sense of relief to the dreary tone of the rest of the lines.

    3. John Keats

John Keats was an English Romantic poet, just like Wordsworth. An interesting fact about this poet is that his work was only published 4 years before his death. Keats died of tuberculosis at the age of just 25. This is sad to hear because he could have made so many more remarkable poems if he only had more time.

    1. Seam by Seam

As many other people have noticed, grammar in the terms of capitalization is used rather odd in this poem. I think that since this person is describing how their brain has split, that they random (or not) capitalization is to show the confusion going on in the persons mind.

    2. As if my Brain had split -

I find this line in the poem extremely interesting as it starts to delve into scientific measures, which I have never seen in a poem before. I think that this line is trying to describe the uneasiness this person is feeling in their mind. I am thinking that the person portrayed in this poem has a lot of things going on in their life that they feel like they cannot control.

    1. EZRA POUND

Ezra Pound was an American poet and critic during the early modernist movement. Pound did not seem like the best person ever though now that I am researching him. He moved to Italy and become pro-fascism. This is so sad that someone who is well known in the writing community had those type of views. He was arrested for these views in the 50's. The movement that he created before his arrest was Imagism. Imagism was a push to set a more direct course for language.

    1. earthly

This word and some others in the poem show how Wordsworth is considered to also be a nature poet, on top of being a pioneer in the Romantic period. Wordsworth was known to see nature as a living personality and it also brought him much joy. Through this poem, I can see him writing in natural elements and places to give him ideas for his famous poems.

    2. ILLIAM WORDSWORTH

Wordsworth was an english romantic poet who helped launch the romantic age. This helps my question of if this poem is indirectly a love poem as well. Wordsworth is also considered a nature poet which shows in this poem, as the topic of love and death is shown through words of nature.

    3. She

The word she being brought up multiple times makes me question if this is a poem related to love in some form. IT is obviously not directly a love poem but more of a sad poem about death. Maybe Wordsworth had a love that died too young and that is who he is referring to.

    1. groand

This is the verb usage of the word groan. When seeing the context of this word in the poem, it is implied that the mother is in the process of giving birth. This word gives important context to the poem about what birthing a child is like for everyone, including the parents and baby.
