Haste and escape for your lives, look not behind you, escape to themountain, lest you be consumed
Another banger line.
day wherein CHRIST has flung the door ofmercy wide open, and stands in the door calling and crying with a loud voice to poor sinners; a daywherein many are flocking to him, and pressing into the kingdom of God; many are daily comingfrom the east, west, north and south; many that were very lately in the same miserable conditionthat you are in, are in now an happy state, with their hearts filled with love to him that has lovedthem and washed them from their sins in his own blood, and rejoycing in hope of the glory of God.How awful is it to be left behind at such a day! To see so many others feasting, while you are piningand perishing! To see so many rejoycing and singing for joy of heart, while you have cause to mournfor sorrow of heart, and howl for vexation of spirit! How can you rest one moment in such acondition?
I think this is speaking of the Rapture. This is a new way that I've heard it be described. Usually, it focuses on those who have already repented. Those who haven't are left to infer their fate.
You shall be tormented in the presence of the holy angels, andin the presence of the Lamb; and when you shall be in this state of suffering, the gloriousinhabitants of heaven shall go forth and look on the awful spectacle, that they may see what thewrath and fierceness of the Almighty is, and when they have seen it, they will fall down and adorethat great power and majesty.
The havoc upon sinners strengthens the resolve of the God-fearing.
God will be so far from pitying you when you cry to him, that ’tis said he will only laugh and mock
I feel like this is one of the greatest differences between God and The Lord, Jesus. Despite being one of the same, Jesus is the more pitying and empathetic whereas God is simply the omnipotent beginning and end of all.
Allthe kings of the earth before GOD are as grasshoppers, they are nothing and less than nothing: Boththeir love and their hatred is to be despised.
Kings might be great in the mortal sense but none are Great than God.
The bow of God’s wrath is bent, and the arrow made ready on the string, and justice bends thearrow at your heart, and strains the bow, and it is nothing but the meer pleasure of God, and that ofan angry God, without any promise or obligation at all, that keeps the arrow one moment frombeing made drunk with your blood
This line goes hard, I like it from a writing stand-point.
Your wickedness makes you as it were heavy as lead, and to tend downwards with greatweight and pressure towards hell; and if God should let you go, you would immediately sink andswiftly descend and plunge into the bottomless gulf, and your healthy constitution, and your owncare and prudence, and best contrivance, and all your righteousness, would have no more influenceto uphold you and keep you out of hell, than a spider’s web would have to stop a falling rock
If you can't hold yourself accountable and lighten your load, when you are at the end of your life, God can not continue to hold you from Hell.
The use may be of awakening to unconverted persons in this congregation.
The downfall of the Israelites will be a wakeup call and a show of God's might.
So that whatever some have imagined and pretended about promises made to natural men’searnest seeking and knocking, ’tis plain and manifest that whatever pains a natural man takes inreligion, whatever prayers he makes, till he believes in Christ, God is under no manner of obligationto keep him a moment from eternal destruction
You can pray for whatever blessing, God is not obligated to give it to you if you are not true.
O my cursed foolishness! I was flattering my self, and pleasing my self with vain dreams ofwhat I would do hereafter, and when I was saying peace and safety, then sudden destruction cameupon me.”
This reminds me of The Picture of Dorian Gray.
How dieth the wise man? as the fool.
"You can be witty all you want, God is wittier."
Natural men’s prudence and care to preserve their own lives, or the care of others topreserve them, don’t secure ‘em a moment
"God can and will strike you down, don't play."
‘Tis no security to a natural man, that he is now in health, and that he don’t see which way heshould now immediately go out of the world by any accident, and that there is no visible danger inany respect in his circumstances. The manifold and continual experience of the world in all ages, shews that this is no evidence that a man is not on the very brink of eternity, and that the next stepwon’t be into another world. The unseen, unthought of ways and means of persons going suddenlyout of the world are innumerable and inconceivable. Unconverted men walk over the pit of hell on arotten covering, and there are innumerable places in this covering so weak that they won’t beartheir weight, and these places are not seen. The arrows of death fly unseen at noon-day; thesharpest sight can’t discern them
"It doesn't matter if you are a healthy mortal man, because God can take you at any time no matter what. You will go to Hell if you aren't repenting and God-fearing."
The devil stands ready to fall upon them and seize them as his own, at what moment Godshall permit him. They belong to him; he has their souls in his possession, and under his dominion.
This feels very repetitive to the few paragraphs before.
He that believeth not is condemned already
If you're not God-fearing, you are Hell-bound.
There is no want of power in God to cast wicked men into hell at any moment.
Not that He can't but that it isn't the time to yet
There is nothing that keeps wicked men, at any one moment, out of hell, but the meer pleasure ofGOD.
This sentiment is shared not in just the bible but by people who aren't Christian, I feel.
Another thing implied is that they are liable to fall of themselves, without being thrown downby the hand of another. As he that stands or walks on slippery ground, needs nothing but his ownweight to throw him down
The entire ethnic group is being put down in a way
Surely thou didst set them in slippery places; thou castedst themdown into destruction. How are they brought into desolation as in a moment?
This is incredibly hard to read and understand due to the older English used.
Surely thou didst setthem in slippery places; thou castedst them down into destruction
If these things were written before such things did happen in history, how was it so accurate? Did someone read it and plant the idea seed?

There are three options here: let the babies suffer a slow death to starvation, the element, or a predator; raise the babies yourself; or kill them now. As a child, he might not have the ability to raise them unless he asked an adult for help. They might also not have the know-how to do so during this time. He also clearly does not have the conscience to leave them here alone, shown to be a very emotional and empathetic child. The last option is to kill them. Though he is young, he is also religious and has been raised this way. His first thought is to commit a wicked mercy.

“This rampant hag, Martha Carrier, was the person of whom the confessions of thewitches and of her own children, among the rest, agreed that the devil had promised hershe should be Queen of Heb.” (Memorandum. )
The witnesses also seem to get a say in the end of the trial
“Before the trial of this prisoner, several of her own children had frankly and fullyconfessed not only that they were witches themselves, but that this their mother hadmade them so.” (Paragraph 3
Before the trial, and yet it was still considered
They were closely tied; personal relationships inspired or sometimes even dictated the court.
I would say this one.
To expose witchcraft and to support his friends in the government by gives detailed descriptionsof each case, thus providing an invaluable record
I'd say this is our main purpose
agreed that the devil had promised her sheshould be Queen of Heb
How do we know that?? Did we come to a consensus lie?
tied together with a wheel-band, so fast that without cutting, it could not be loosened. Itwas done by a specter, and the sufferer affirmed it was the prisoner’s
Spinning wheel twine? Martha tied her using her spinning wheel materials? Really.
where they had bread and wine administered unto them
This sounds rather holy? It sounds like they had bible study, not a witchcraft meeting.

Salem!! Witch Trials!!!!
devil carried them on a pole to awitch meeting, but the pole broke and she hanging about Carrier’s neck, they both fell down, and shethen received an hurt by the fall, whereof she was not at this very time recovered.
??? On a pale.. the Devil himself? Why is she hanging on Martha's neck? How does this make sense?
she had seen the prisoner at some of their witch meetings and that it was thisCarrier who persuaded her to be a witch
Did she really?
immediately her hand, which had formerly been poisoned as is above said, began to pain her greatly, and she had a strangeburning at her stomach, but then was struck deaf, so that she could not hear any of the prayer orsinging till the two or three last words of the Psalm
Symptoms of her affliction either conveniently timed or she lied about it, also could have been in such great pain that she stopped listening
one-half of her right hand became greatly swollen andvery painful, as also part of her face : whereof she can give no account how it came. It continued verybad for some days; and several times since, she has had a great pain in her breast and been soseized on her legs that she has hardly been able to go.
Once more, this sounds like an affliction that they just didn't have a name yet for.
this Carrier then took her by the shoulderand, shaking her, asked her where she lived. She made her no answer, although as Carrier, wholived next door to her father’s house, could not in reason but know who she was.
Two weeks before on a Sunday, Martha just started to randomly shake her and asked where she lived?
she told him he had lately lost a cow and itshould not be long before he lost another,
She could just be a cow-whisperer.
John Rogger also testified that upon the threatening words of this malicious Carrier, hiscattlewould be strangely bewitched,
Sounds like someone following the train.
she would clap her hands at him, andsay he should get nothing by it; whereupon he several times lost his cattle by strange deaths, whereofno natural causes could be given
Right...
he could thrust a knitting needle into hiswound, four inches deep; but presently, after her being seized, he was thoroughly healed.
Just like that? There's no cases of that ever so I find that very unlikely.
Richard, the son of Martha Carrier, having some differencewith him, pulled him down by the hair of the head. When he rose again, he was going to strike atRichard Carrier, but fell down flat on his back to the ground and had not power to stir hand or footuntil he told Carrier he yielded: and then he saw the shape of Martha Carrier go off his breast.
Could have just been scared and/or lying.
Sarah Abbot, his wife, also testified that her husband was not only all this while afflicted inhis body, but also that strange, extraordinary, and unaccountable calamities befell his cattle, theirdeath being such as they could guess at no natural reason for.
Again, they don't know all they can about cattle and its health. There are some cattle-only diseases or noncattle-given diseases that can infect them for the first time and attack their immune systems.
He was brought until death’s door and so remained until Carrier was taken and carried away by theConstable
This is strange but there are other explanations as this time was disease-ridden and had few medical options/advice to cure or stop some of these afflictions.
Another sore then bred in his groin, which was likewise cut and put him to very great misery
Ouch.
Her expressions in this angerwere that she would stick as close to Abbot as the bark stuck to the tree, and that he should repent ofit afore seven years came to an end, so as Doctor Prescot should never cure him. These words wereheard by others besides Abbot himself, who also heard her say she would hold his nose as close tothe grindstone as ever it was held since his name was Abbot.
Again, could be a lie. It is easy for several people to lie together if they just don't like one person. It's how many witchcraft accusations came about, especially if the person had land or something else to their name.
Nevertheless, this evidence was not producedagainst the prisoner at the bar, inasmuch as there was other evidence enough to proceed upon.
It was just for the community at that point so any accusations would never be brought on them in the future.
several of her own children had frankly and fully confessednot only that they were witches themselves, but that this their mother had made them so. Thisconfession they made with great shows of repentance , and with much demonstration of truth.
Again, very easy to lie when your own life is on the line. It's easier to continue with an already-made accusation than wait and have someone else accuse you and have very little chance of surviving that accusation.
look of Carrier then laid the afflicted people for dead, and her touch, if her eye at thesame time were off them, raised them again
So it is like the saying "if looks could kill"?
the poor people were so tortured that every oneexpected their death upon the very spot, but that upon the binding of Carrier they were eased
It is very easy to lie about this
biting, pricking, pinching, and choking of them
Physically? Or in a spiritual way?
Martha Carrier, or her shape
As if she were a demon
pleading not guilty to her indictment
I can guess why, she was likely very innocent in this case
indicted for bewitching certain persons
bewitching to what gain? and how exactly did she bewitch them?

made us all, but He has made a great differ-ence between his white and red children. HE has given us different complex-ions and different customs. To you HE has given the arts. To these Hz has notopened our eyes. We know these things to be true. Since Hr has made sogreat a difference between us in other things, why may we not conclude thathe has given us a different religion according to our understanding? The GreatSpirit does right. He knows what is best for his children; we are satisfied.
A very lovely idea that whatever God or Great Spirit there is has decided that there must be different sects of religion in order to adhere to the people, not the people adhering to one religion that does not reflect who they are.
We also have a religion, which was given to our forefathers, and hasbeen handed down to us their children. We worship in that way. It teachesus to be thankful for all the favors we receive; to love each other, and to beunited. We never quarrel about religion.
The similarities are almost indistinguishable so why must we fight?
