    1. strung up on a tree

In 1936, when this book was written, if a white woman said that a black man touched her, then it was very common for the white men to kill the black man. Even if it was not true. Instead of a court with lawyers and judge, they just attacked the man and killed him. Usually the put him in a tree, to be an example. This was called lynching, and it was done by the KKK, but also by many other white people.
