    1. Others, realizing that they were destined to spend their youth in dank factories rather than in classrooms or schoolyards, grew sullen and withdrawn.

This line really brought to light how difficult it was for immigrant families, and how poverty was generational as well. While native Americans grew up in classrooms and schoolyards, immigrants were subject to grueling conditions.

Reading the passage I felt a sense of complacency within Jalcocotan to an extent. Although poverty was an influencing factor, there was minimal change to the village throughout hundreds of years.

    1. You are deeply convinced you say “that to enhance the prosperity and preserve the tranquility of this State, Asiatic immigration must be checked.” This, your Excellency, is but onestep towards a retrograde movement of the government, which, on reflection, you will discover; and which the citizens of this country ought never to tolerate. It was one of the principal causes of quarrel between you (when colonies) and England; when the latter pressed laws against emigration, you looked for immigration; it came, and immigration made youwhat you are—your nation what it is.

Norman is calling out Gov. Bigler on his hypocrisy! Mentioning that America was founded on immigration, Norman followed mentioning that by prohibiting Asian passage, is a step backwards in the government.

    1. China emulate the West and modernize in order to throw off the yoke of foreign domination

It is interesting to see the shockwaves of the American Revolution. Seen as the first country to overpower imperialist powers, other countries seemed to follow its modernization to "throw off the yoke of foreign domination".

    1. and shall never after be admitted to become a citizen of the United States

This really shows how scared the US Gov is against alien species - it looks as if they have an extremely close minded & precautious perspective.

Immigrants are still given the right to court.

Free immigration had boomed once the American revolution had concluded, as the war disrupted the existing trade network between Britain and opened itself up to other markets. There was a shift from slaves/convicts to free immigrants in this time, the early 1800's.

In a day with Amazon prime shipping, this line was a stark reminder that transportation was much slower in the past, with ships taking weeks/months to cross the Atlantic just to bring supplies.

Mentioned in the video, Bacon had held distaste for Berkeley for abusing his power for personal gain, and I believe this bullet point accurately displays this distaste.

In conjunction with mary's comment above, it seems as though christian religion was the main focus, going over the fact that a religion requires people to be followers/believers.

    1. apparently insatiable demand for labor has led to a tolerance of large-scale undocumented immigration and a proliferation of temporary worker programs, mirroring earlier periods of unfettered, Virginia-style migration.

I find it ironic that we typically view Virginia style migration negatively, as it strips immigrants of their humanity, but now that we have a unfulfilled demand for labor, we are quietly filling the demand with the same inhumane migration.

    1. This culture was not a simple exten-sion of their past, an embracement of the new order of capitalism, or simply an affirmation of a desire to become an American.

Being in a new country, simply extending ones past culture would most likely warrant negative response, so it makes sense that old traditions were given a "new" spin.

I feel as though this "immigrant perspective" is often forgotten about in todays immigrant politics, with the majority of focus being on how immigration impacts existing Americans. Always being quick to judge, I feel that it could be beneficial to be more understanding of the immigrant sacrifices.

    1. As to the second part of the question, Whether the same immaterial substance remaining, there may be two distinct persons; which question seems to me to be built on this, — Whether the same immaterial being, being conscious of the action of its past duration, may be wholly stripped of all the consciousness of its past exis-tence, and lose it beyond the power of ever retrieving it again: and so as it were beginning a new account from a new period, have a consciousness that cannot reach beyond this new state.

I believe Loche is attempting to cap the loose end of the question, where what happens to the original biomass once it's consciousness is transferred?

This thought was interesting as I never really thought about how slow and inefficient conscious thought was, and how some decisions are simply better off without it.

    1. Why do we not react in the same way to a defective man: a murderer, say, or a rapist? Why don’t we laugh at a judge who punishes a crimi-nal, just as heartily as we laugh at Basil Fawlty?

Apart from the obvious reason of the severity of two said issues, the reason why is that cars, computers and other manmade machines are fixable, understandable and ultimately controllable. Humans are not fully understood and are by no means controllable, and our difference in reaction is our attempt to regain control (ie jail).

    2. This theory envisions the mind as an emergent property of individually unconscious neural cells when they interact in complex ways, analogous to wetness as an emergent property of water molecules, or life as an emergent property of amino acid molecules which are individually lifeless

I agree with this theory that our consciousness/awareness/ego is not immaterial but rather a characteristic that emerges from a collective neural network.
