    1. This does not mean you have to give the game away right from the start

    1. f you don't pay people enough they won't be motivated.

What is he saying here? What point is he trying to make? Is it a point that you could agree with? Is there any point in your life that you can see this being true?

    2. asks that are algorithmic,a set of rules where you have to just follow along and get a right answer

Again, what is this an example of? Mechanical or cognitive?

    3. They gave them these challenges and they said to incentivise their performance they gave them three levels of rewards. So,if you did pretty wellyou got a small monetary reward, if you did medium well you got a medium monetary reward, andif you did really well, if you were one of the top performers you got a large cash prize. We've seen this movie before, this is essentially a typical motivation scheme within organisations; we reward the very top performers, we ignore the low performers

      • First, Pink is pretty much setting up our common knowledge. We, like the researchers, expect what's described here. We all believe that monetary rewards (money) is a good incentive. No one would argue against this idea. So why do Pink bring this up if it's common knowledge? In order to stress that money as a motivation is not as predictable as we believe it to be (here he is setting up the REAL topic he has in mind)
    4. The surprising truth about what motivates us

The title of this lecture should already give you an idea about what Dan Pink is going to be discussing. Based on the title itself,

What's the general topic based on the title?

What does he plan to reveal to us (his readers/listeners)?

In the title, is says "us." Who is "us" referring to?

    5. I want to give you two that call into question this idea that if you reward something you getmore of the behaviour you want; if you punish something you get less of it

What is Dan Pink doing here?

He is setting up the conversation about motivation to his listeners so that he can begin discussing our understanding about motivation. Like an intro paragraph to a college essay, he is giving us the background information necessary to understand his lecture. Without a common understanding, there is not starting point to discuss.
