    1. But no one of us would have dared to dispute a white man's word--oh, no; not in those days.

      Back then you were just about guaranteed a whipping or some form of punishment if you so as disagree with a white man or even white woman. These days, even though society has progressed, many racist white men still hold positions of power and can punish black people. Whether their a judge, policeman, or even just a random white man walking down the street who calls 911 on innocent black people for doing basic things, micro aggressions and racism still exist.

    2. When I saw these men in shackled, and the guards with their guns, I was scared nearly to death.

      Mostly everyone knows how bad slavery was, but it's nearly impossible to begin to imagine to pain, suffering, depression, and anxiety black people must've faced and felt during that time. This sentence also reminds me of how many people feel somewhat like this when they think of the police.

    3. The men got $3 a week and the women $2.

      It's so disheartening to know that women have always been paid less men and seen as unequal compared to them. The wage gap has always existed and still exists to this day and happens to most women, especially black women.
