    1. A few years later New York City purchased the two private companies and began to merge them. Unfortunately, due to different physical features and track infrastructure, the two lines had to be kept separated into two divisions, the A and B divisions. The A division is the number line trains such as 1,2,3, and 4. The B division is the letter line trains such as A,B,C, and D.[3]

After reading this far, the paper it sounds like it's going to be a history of the MTA.

    1. I’ll layout with introductory to discourse communities and their goals. Why is it called discourse community and what is the meaning of them?

Good! It sounds like you have your audience in mind.

    2. I have gathered almost enough information for my project, but I am still gathering information to make sure that I’ll be able to cover everything. It’s just requires few more things to be done with gathering information about my project.

Please be specific as to what kind of info you are gathering.

    3. The real issue is my discourse community is a little unbalanced in terms of means of communication. That is the reason the managers use the simplest and most used means of communication so that all members of the group can understand with ease.

Interesting. Make sure to provide elaboration here.

    4. In the essay, Coaches Can Read, Too by Sean Branick, it begins with a little background about the writer, Sean Branick, and his accomplishments. I

Ok. too bad you forgot to do part 1

    5. am complete with project outline. The genre I will be using in writing my report is class report mixed with autobiography. For my layout, my introduction will in a class report style, In the middle I will use autobiography style to integrate my experience into my project, and my outro will go back to the class report style. As for my plan when writing this proje

Sounds like a good genre plan.

    6. I have chosen to present this essay as an informative essay. I really want to go into depth in explaining the discourse community, the genres, and how they communicate.

If you provide more detail, I may be able to offer more suggestions

    7. For the genre, I plan on using paychecks to see how much a labor worker would receive when they are in a union and comparing it to when they are not in a union.

I'm curious as to why you are using paychecks as unions don't produce paychecks. They produce other documentation that is union related, so I would suggest that you explore that area.

    1. I have decided to stick with a more structured style of delivery. In the beginning I felt stagnant about how I wanted to present my work. An added detail that I want to incorporate in my interview portion is actual dialogue.

I'd love to hear more detail!

    2. I think I might just summarize it in a paragraph form. The type of genre I chose for discourse community social media is social networking sites. I will talk about how using social networking sites affect our everyday lives. We may not realize but it really has a positive or even negative affect on us

I'd like to hear more about this!

    1. have started to gather information about my community which is molecular gastronomy and the genre that I have chosen was social media.

But what is the genre of your paper going to be?

    1. METHODS

Branick's section is on methods. He discusses below the ways he conducted his research. Why does he discuss his methods? That is a good question.

    2. When you group your sentences below, what is Branick doing and why is he doing it?

The professor is asking us to describe how Branick writes this passage. Why? Because he wants us to be able to do the same kinds of things in our paper.

    3. This idea of reading players and the game is directly reflective of Tony Mirabelli’s idea of multiple literacies.

Here, Branick links his essay back to Mirabelli. Why? He does so in order to give credibility to his writing by drawing upon another expert on discourse communities.

    1. Eduard Ruiz https://docs.google.com/document/d/12pBscKgLZ5MkYtz9RY89jNz-hnH-YhlTnMnB4EHGGJo/edit?usp=sharing

I like this reflection, Eduard. Some good stuff in here.

    2. The discourse community I chosen to write about stem from my time in military as a Combat Engineer. My criteria for establishing Combat Engineer as a discourse community is the from the readings and my personal experience

Really glad to hear your thoughts in this reflective piece, Dennis. I'm glad things are making sense. The work you're doing looks very good as well. All goes to show how important attitude is.

    1. Eduard Ruiz https://docs.google.com/document/d/12pBscKgLZ5MkYtz9RY89jNz-hnH-YhlTnMnB4EHGGJo/edit?usp=sharing

I like this reflection, Eduard. Some good stuff in here.

    1. Hi Kym,

Explain how what you have read and written so far will help you make this new writing task easier for you as you begin. If you feel like you did this, could you be more explicit? What we want to know here is how you can change your writing and your approach to make things easier.

    1. metapaper 2

Thanks for posting this, Tania. You didn't mention any specifics from going back over your work. This paper skirts along the surface rather than getting into much specifics. It's hard for me to guage without some more detailed reflection.

    1. The genre I will be focusing on is an electronic newsletter because it’s a very important genre for this discourse community that keeps its goals organized and intact. I feel good about explaining the discourse community and what they talk about and the goals they share. I am worried about expanding on the genre and how to clearly and concisely explain the genre’s role in the discourse community

      Ok. Sounds good.

    2. The third would be from Wikipedia’s “Discourse community”. In the article, they present the six characteristics of a discourse community and I think it can be very helpful to go down the six characteristics and make sure I am including the defining characteristics from my discourse community as well so that my information is rounded.

What we're looking for here is how the passages can be emulated.

    1. I am in a weird spot right now. In order to explain and present my discourse community, I have to give a nice background first. Since my chosen topic is already specific, I feel like I’m able to dive into details. However, I also feel like there’s few room for me to expand. The things we use normally are texts, orders, voice chats(sometimes). I’ll probably go with texts, it is a relative instance to explain thoroughly.

Spend a little more time elaborating for your class community so we can provide you more specific feedback. There's a lot you could mention about your difficulties that are not being expressed.

    1. The first passage I will try to emulate into my own project stems from Sean Branick article. I will use the “characteristics of a discourse community” section to help better explain my ideas and better explain what the DC I chosen is. This will help me explain terms not familiar with people. The second passage I will be using comes from Ann M. John; the section I will be using is the “the cost of affiliation” on page 11 of her article. I will be trying to show how becoming a Combat Engineer requires great sacrifices. The third passage I will be using comes from the Wikipedia article on discourse community. I will be using the first section the describe what a DC is. This article will help me outline in explaining what my DC that I have chosen is.

You see very focused here. Nice!

    1. ony Maribelli, understanding the menu, the customer and the use of lexis in order to gain the upper hand in a difficult situation. I related to once where a client was asking for my advice of the focal point of the room, I was so confused due to it being my first week at my job, I didn’t know the lingo or lexis of my discourse community. That is where I knew that each and every discourse community has its similar yet very different and diverse lexis, lexis in a discourse community is very important in order to get around your community.

Ok. While you talk about meaning here, we're interested in thinking like a writer. How can you emulate what they've done? Also missing a third example.

    1. https://docs.google.com/document/d/12s9fWYhEpqC7rJl0urNDOHK9txc-xdvGjioyKkMOC88/edit?usp=sharing

I'm confused. Is this Blog Post 5? If so, please post as such.

    1. Branick’s method gave me the idea of interviewing members of my own discourse community to get a direct look of another perspective

What we're looking for is how you will emulate their writing in your own. Also, you left our part 3.

    2. When you think of the gym, the most common thought that comes to mind is working out which makes workout routines all the more appropriate to discuss for my project. Therefore as I begin this project, I feel confident that I’ll be able to clearly elaborate on the components such as goals, purpose and commitments my discourse community has

Make sure to have examples, links to examples, or pictures of examples.

    3. Such as my sister who introduced me to my discourse community and also my friend who’s also a long time member of Equinox Fitness

Ok. You mention what you will be doing, but what have you done?

    1. My first major assignment requires a set of steps until its conclusion.

Anel, I copy and pasted your word file into the blog post. Blog posts should be posted directly into the blog. Pleae try to remember this in the future.

    2. The last one is the one by whom the discourse community was created.  He knows the whole history about this community

Nicely done Anel. You sound like you have a good plan.

    1. But don’t think I’ll slip up and start talking about what brand is better than the other.

Certainly need to be careful about this.

Overall, I am concerned about your choice for the DC project. You may be able to pull it off. I'd suggest you do some research into discourse communities and phone usage.

    2. in my discourse community. On page 4, paragraph 6, Branick talks about lingo that only people within the coaching community would understand. I will do the same as well to introduce that concept to my readers. Ann M. Johns in Discourse Communities and Communities of Practice, one concept I would briefly bring up is that some ideas—whether they are a part of the community or not—are universal. On page 5, in the middle of paragraph 2, she talks about how musicians despite having practicing and mastering different instruments, they all have values that link them together. An example she provided was “whether they are gu

      some good stuff in here.

    1. personally believe the readings we did in class helped me understand what exactly discourse communities are. But more specifically I believe Wikipedia was a lot more helpful. That’s because it really explained what exactly discourse communities are, and used proper terms and definitions to explain it well. However, Sean Branick’s reading helped me understand leadership and how to become one. Leaders are there to guide the others and pass on to knowledge they know to others. In addition Tony Mirabelli’s helped me understand how knowing the menu can make a pleasant environment between customers and waiters. Because it’s easier to answer and questions they have

ok. What we're looking for is how you can emulate the work you read.

    2. The discourse community I’m going to be talking about is social media. Gathering information isn’t as easy as it looks. I’m going to be doing some research online, reading articles so I have back up evidence. I want to focus more on social networking sites and how that affects our lives in everyday life. We may not realize but a lot of problems start from these sites such as facebook, instagram, snapchat and much more.

One of the difficulties for choosing this as a discourse community is the idea of shared goals. I think this is important so please do address it in the paper.

I found this essay for you that might help. Please take a look. https://pdfs.semanticscholar.org/dd19/4239a42bb7989fc8b041e599113604e71dbd.pdf

    1. s of right now, I’m currently gathering information for my topic. The whole idea of molecular gastronomy is a topic that everyone should know of, why? because it’s food, and we as humans fuel ourselves on food. As said in my previous blog I will be using social media as my genre and the way I will be opening my project with background information on my career path and how seeing images of the particular topic had played an influence in my life.

I wish you had provided more explanation, as I really can't get a grasp of where you are in your thinking/planning.

    1. Also, how he explains about genres and lexis is worth mentioning about. Also the reading of Sean Branick was very informative as it explains how coaches are also members of specific discourse community and how they are reading players and want a positive end result.

We want to know how you are going to emulate these writers.

    2. I am also asking people who are related to my discourse community to understand it better. I am feeling good and confident  about explaining programs which Department of Education creates for children with special education through research and feedback. I’m feeling worried about forgetting anything which I did not write about which is worth mentioning.

So the DOE is very, very expansive. It would help considerably if you could narrow down your topic within the DOE. You could choose math teachers, for instance, school principles, bilingual educators, custodians, and on and on.

    1. Wikipedia entry was very knowledgeable for me. It has showed me what discourse communities are. Now I know how I can apply all the definitions and meanings about community to my paper. Tony Mirabelli and Sean Branick were also very helpful for me in trying to understand the discourse community. The reading by Mirabelli helped me to understand the importance of how to read people and not only the menu. It showed me how it’s important to know genre of community and special lexis they use between them. The reading from Branick showed me how coaches could be discourse community. How they use genre, special lexis in their communication by using game sheets and playbook. That they share common goals and purpose for helping kids to improve their performance and make them better people.

What we're looking for here is how you are going to emulate these texts.

    2. I chose the genre of social media, texting, and meetings because that’s how we communicate.

So you are going to write in the genre of social media? How are you going to do this? Or are you going to write ABOUT social media. Two different questions.

    1. The readings from both Johns and Branick were especially helpful in trying to understand the discourse community. The reading by Branick helped me understand the importance of good leaders when it comes to any kind of team that needs leadership. Leaders need to be capable of learning new methods of doing stuff and being able to pass that new knowledge to the players in order to have a better strategy. As well as organized and supportive to keep progressing in their skills as well as keep them on track to reach their goals. The reading from Johns was helpful because it helped me understand the phrases like enculturate referring to when newcomers to a group adapting to the routine and ways within that discord community. There were also all the different types of situations that can happen from within a discourse community throughout the members’ time there.

What we are asking for here is how you can emulate what you read in your own project.

    1. want to do the same. By explaining the genres and what the purpose is followed by the lexis will help my readers understand better.

I'm interested to see how, more specifically, you can incorporate these ideas.

    1. 3. All the people that I’m going to include are my family and friends since my discourse community is about the phone, and all of them use a phone so I’m going to make them part of it. I’m going to ask what are they doing through the day in their phone, how many hours they use their phone and how they can see their life without it if it’s a sacrifice not use their device all day, and hypothetical cases if they didn’t have a phone what they would do on the day, how they feel and more…

One of the keys of a DC is that they work together for a common purpose. You should talk to me about this.

    1. From Ann M. Johns passage “Discourse Communities and Communities”, the paragraph I chose was on pg.10, second to last paragraph. John briefly discuss about the long proces one would to take in order to join a discourse community. This ties in with labor unions because the process in order to join a labor union takes months to complete. Sean Branick passage “Coaches Can Read Too” has a paragraph I would want to touch on. On pg.2, in “Characteristics of An Effective Coach”, Brancick touches on five qualities a coach must have while being on the field. I want to touch on the fourth quality which is to be a learner

We're going to discuss this in class. We're looking for you to thinking as a writer here, not as a reader.

    2. I feel pretty good about the interviews I have collected and the information about labor unions. I’m a bit worried about connecting this topic with the readings which I still have yet to do.

Feel free to share your methods for collecting data.

    1. “Within an online discourse community text oftentimes circulate in what can be considered to be heterogeneous grouping”. I think the reason why that works is because it is used in today’s world. In the context of the Wikipedia entry, it illustrates how online discourse communities work. It gives a great overview on the section it is part of. It uses proper language that enhances comprehension. In the large essay, it emphasizes on the idea of how diverse and different discourse communities are.

I think there's some confusion here of the assigned task. Also, part 3 is missing.

    2. I thought, they weren’t gonna be that interested in participating, but to my surprise, they were willing to collaborate. Although, I don’t know how I might conduct an interview, or make them fill a survey out, I am certain I have their support. I will be mainly focusing in

This slide share should help. Also, Google forms is a good way to have them do a survey. I'll share some other stuff in class as well.

    1. Most people move within and between different discourse communities every day. To produce text within a discourse community, it can take place only if the writer can define his or her goals in terms of the community’s interpretive conventions.

I would be curious to know where you got directions for writing abstracts.
