depends on students' academic abilities, rather than on their abilities to understand what professors expect of them
I think is really important to leave off on because although colleges ensure us a path for success, it depends on how the students take their path, and see where it goes from there.

oth traditional and first-generation students agreed tha
I think it's good that they included "both traditional and first-generation students..." but I'm not sure if it's always important to establish their academic status/standing all the time. The syntax seem like it's grouping and separating them up, when in reality they're all students.

assumption they knew [APA or MLA style] and
APA, or actually MLA is the "standard" so to the professor, it is only right to assume they know the standard.

We're designed to deal with people's life crises
they are to DEAL with people's life crises, but not help them or provide assistance. syntax says a lot.

. I say [for a standard four credit course] you have to have 8 h a week outside of class, or you're not going to make it
This sounds like a warning but also kind of an unwritten or an expectation that is not said. It sounds like they are preparing you for the worst, but not in the most negative way, but also in a different way to hope for their success.

as advising and study habits, directly affected GP
I didn't realize that study habits would reflect on GPA since studying is what you do, but your end result of that can be different and that can be determined by "grades" or what grade you get.

proposes that new students start with pre-enrollment packages of individual attributes, previous schooling, and family support
I think this is saying that the more support/additional support you have. the less likely you are to add to retention rates.

complex relationships
What makes a complex relationship for characters of institutions? Is it the status of the school? Location?

First generation students are less likely to graduate than peers who have at least one parent with a college education (National Center for Educa? tional Statistics 2005).
I didn't realize that first gens are less likely to graduate until this. I thought the rates would be higher for graduating. I guess it's because of the fact that they have someone to "relate" to.

She learned from other college students, and they were basically her guide into college.

My family followed me around
I feel like this sentence structure is important. The way it's worded is like the family only followed, but did not go into depth or have that level of intimacy with their child.
