This reading was the most dificult to read. I am beyond happy that is is over. However, it made me think and reserch the most out of the other readings. Becasue of the lack of religious and greek mythology knowlege. Some times I was not sure how they are related or why they woulc be righten in the same book. Maybe I missed something. To truly understand some of the ideas John Milton was trying to convey I had to reserch the story of Satan and the creation of Adam and Eve. This reading opened my mind to views I might not have now becasue I had to dig deper than my basic knowledge on the subject matter.

    2. resolve to sit no longer confin’d in Hell, but to follow Satan thir Sire up to the place of Man

Now that Adam and Eve have been banished from the garden of Eden. They will have to endure death and have the choice to sin if they want to. They are no longer immune to these horrid things.

    1. And sons of men, whom God hath thus advanc’t, Created in his Image, there to dwell And worship him, and in reward to rule Over his Works, on Earth, in Sea, or Air, And multiply a Race of Worshippers

He is saying that man was created in the image of God to worship him and rule over his creation on Earth and raise more children to do the same. Its hard to believe this was our purpose and we have done nothing nut destroy the world and use the resources it provides and the planet is withering away.

    2. Bacchus

Bacchus was the Roman god of agriculture, wine and fertility, equivalent to the Greek god Dionysus. Dionysius was said to be the last god to join the twelve Olympians. Supposedly, Hestia gave up her seat for him. His plants were vines and twirling ivy.

    1. Of what he was, what is, and what must be

I tried to do more research on Satan but think I am more confused now than ever. With so many questions? and not many answers. When did our image of him change? Does he miss being in heaven or does e just want to be worshiped more than God?

    1. .

I wish I could get into reading more but I am not an avid reader and think I was spoiled with the prior readings I think this one took to long and was east to read but hard to follow. I think the religious aspects of the story which are almost 100 percent make it difficult for some people to follow specially when I don't have an extensive knowledge of the Bible. I found some parts very nicely written and it helped me get through but right now I feel disappointed that the reading must go on.

    2. Regions of sorrow, doleful shades, where peace [ 65 ] And rest can never dwell, hope never comes

So sad and vivid makes you feel some kind of way. This story is simple and boring but it has its moments of poetic inspiration.

    3. If he oppos’d; and with ambitious aim Against the Throne and Monarchy of God

Sad to say I am so confused these last reading have not been my fave almost wish these had bee first. Is he comparing the King to God. Because the King has absolute power.

    1. they so prevalent with their Husbands and Parents, that many times by their importunate perswasions, they cause as much, nay, more mischief secretly, then if they had the management of publick Affairs.

Makes me think of todays government and how politicians are influenced by the companies and people that pay their campaigns.

    2. Spear made of white Diamond, cut like the tail of a Blazing Star, which signified that she was ready to assault those that proved her Enemies.

Impressive she arrived to a new world is an Empress. Other are still amazed by her so find it unlikely she is not a Goddess and looks like she has not only learned their language but also picked up some ass kicking skills along the way.

    3. although she came out of another world, yet was she but a mortal.

Wow. I don't know if I would have been so honest if I were in her position. I mean who wouldn't want to be worshiped and treated like a God or Goddess.

    4. By which we may see, that Novelty discomposes the mind, but acquaintance settles it in peace and tranquillity.

This is very true. Many new adventures await for us in the future and sometime change is good but it is scary and it might sock us into wanting to stay in the same spot and we hinder our own growth. But family and friends are what keep us going. They have the ability to ground us and keep us calm.

    5. Augurers

augurer Noun (plural augurers) (obsolete) An augur

Augur: noun The definition of an augur is a clairvoyant, priest or collection of priests whose job it was to interpret what the gods wanted.

So a group of guys were like cool we will take this girl no one knows anything about except she is god looking and just sail of into an unknown adventure.

    7. But when he fancied himself the happiest man of the World, he proved to be the most unfortunate; for Heaven frowning at his Theft, raised such a Tempest,

I am so glad he did't just get away with it. Who does he think he is I mean he doesn't even care about her and what she feels. He just kidnapped her.

    1. if it were not by the means of women, they would be quite extinguished out of the world: and a finall ende of them all

As a woman I love this section but men are also needed for reproduction. An ovum can not by its self create new life. I think woman give more to a child than men after fertilization of the ovum because they sacrifice themselves for the child but is it sexist and just as bad that women forget that a man is also needed in creating life?

    2. So Nature yeelds my Soule a sad delight.

I enjoyed this line it just makes me think of the beauty of nature. But I wonder if the sadness nature brings her is death. After all death is a part of nature.

    3. daies

This is the first time I am happy we have a structure if writing and spelling rules. At first I thought man i wish i could spell things the way I wanted then it would be so much easier. But as a reader it is so difficult because if you don't understand the word you cant even look it up and be certain that the definition you find is correct.

    1. .

For me this response was hard to follow because of the spelling and the bible references. I had to look up several things and reread the section to truly understand what she was trying to convey.

    2. Serpent Porphirus, as now you doo, which, though full of deadly poyson, yet being toothlesse, hurteth none so much as himselfe.

This made me think of " dog's bark is worse than his bite".

    3. they were made of the rib of a man

Genesis 2: 21-22 "Be careful if you make a woman cry, because god counts her tears. the woman came out of man's rib. Not from his feet to be walked on. Not from his head to be superior, but from his side to be his equal. Under his arm to be protected and next to his heart to be loved."

    4. women are crooked by nature, for small occasion will cause them to be angry.

He was either hurt by a woman like this or he has mommy issues. What ever the case might have been he has a horrible view of all women. I wonder if he was ever married.

    5. And for better proof I refer myself to the judgment of men which have more experience than myself,

So he doesn't know what he is talking about because no woman in his town will marry him. He has to refer to the experience of other men an proof that women are horrible.

    1. Let them want nothing that my house affords.

This is like when you visit your grandma's house. Everything in her pantry and fridge is fair game. She sees you and that is the first thing she asks you. Are you hungry?

    2. Bid them come near.

This play reminds me of the day we talked about word selection and how some words make you change your perception of a story being told. This allows me to visualize the Lord with a fancy wave asking the servant to ask them to come close.

    3. Were he not warm’d with ale

The language in this play is difficult for me to comprehend. Is he telling the Lord he is not drunk? If he is this is such an eloquent way of saying he is sober.

    4. paucas pallabris

meaning a few words. The translation I found said this was Spanish but I think not. Or this could be from an earlier Spanish similar to old English that it is far from modern English.

    1. !

Before today the only peace of work Shakespeare has written that I had to read was Romeo and Juliet. It was good but did not really interest me. I never really bothered to read anything else before today and I am amazed at his writing. All of these sonnets were beautiful, sad, encouraging and just amazing. Some of them were more relatable than other but still amazing in themselves. Some I found difficult to understand but once I was able to understand they were breath taking.

    2. And with old woes new wail my dear time’s waste:

I find this as viscous cycle most of us get trapped in sometimes. We remember and regret the things and choices we made or didn't make but we allow that to slow down our future progress. We waist time thinking if what could have been not realizing we are wasting the moment we are living in.

    3. My love shall in my verse ever live young.

His love of writing will for ever live. We tech this to all the young people because his writing made an impact. I wonder if he could foresee how long how long his writing would live on.

    4. brood

NOUN a family of young animals, especially of a bird, produced at one hatching or birth. "a brood of chicks" VERB

      2. (of a bird) sit on (eggs) to hatch them. ADJECTIVE (of an animal) kept to be used for breeding.
    5. But thy eternal summer shall not fade

I understood this as the memory of a person will never fade. I thought that he could be stating that her beauty will never fade but lines above se said "fair sometime declines". Meaning the memory of her beauty will not fade.

    6. And nothing ‘gainst Time’s scythe can make defence

I love this line. It gives me hope for the future and strength to persevere because no matter what is going on in life tomorrow will come. Nothing can stop time so all you can do is keep going. Make the best of what you have and work hard for what you want.

    7. scythe

definition: NOUN a tool used for cutting crops such as grass or wheat, with a long curved blade at the end of a long pole attached to which are one or two short handles.

    8. Despite of wrinkles this thy golden time.

Could this be where we say our golden years? according to modern research this would roughly fall between the ages of 65 and 80+.

    1. vnto

The spelling caught my eye so fun fact on the development of spelling as we know it today. A "British standard" began to emerge following the 1755 publication of Samuel Johnson's A Dictionary of the English Language, and an "American standard" started following the work of Noah Webster and in particular his American Dictionary of the English Language, first published in 1828.

    1. Oh, cruel time! which takes in trust Our youth, our joys, and all we have, And pays us but with age and dust;

Time destroys everything in its path. Time slowly takes everything from you and you cant stop it.

    2. Upon a thankless errand

I like this comparison of life. We come into this world live our lives kind of like running errands and in the end you don't receive any thing in return.

    3. .

I find this poem so beautifully sad. The lucky ones can say it was better to have loved and lost then never to have loved. This seems as if he surrendered himself to this love with complete blind faith only to have been betrayed and to be left.

    1. trial of mine heart and inward affection.

So far I am not following this story. Is she writing to apologize for how she felt about the king or is she being forced to say this.

    1. never forsaking his servant in time of need, appeared to his creature, which had forsaken him,

Why would Jesus choose this moment to appear to her? It makes you question the mental state she was in at the moment. His vision rid her of all the demons trapped in her head.

    1. the Queen Guenever, and said plainly that he would wed her which was his uncle’s wife and his father’s wife.

Why would you want to marry the woman that caused so much blood shed. Why would you want to marry your uncles wife that was also your fathers wife? Wait are you saying he married his mother?

    2. I must do much harm or I rescue her; and peradventure I shall there destroy some of my best friends, that should much repent me; and peradventure there be some, an they could well bring it about, or disobey my lord King Arthur,

He already did this. He is acting like this could happen but he already did. He killed 12 knights to escape his own death and he disobeyed/shamed the King by sleeping with his wife.

    3. it is now your part to hold with the queen, that she be not slain and put to a mischievous death, for an she so die the shame shall be yours.

This would not be happening if she would have left with him the night he was a bad ass and got away.

    4. I will well, said Sir Launcelot, for have ye no doubt, while I am living I shall rescue you. And then he kissed her, and either gave other a ring; and so there he left the queen, and went until his lodging.

Why would you plan to save the queen after leaving her. Why not save some trouble and just take her with I mean he just killed 12 of the best knights I am sure he can exit the palace with the queen. This would save the time of him having to come back for her.

    5. gave him such a buffet upon the helmet, that he fell grovelling dead within the chamber door.

So now Sir Launcelot is a murdered and an adulterer. Why is it that when life catches up to us all we want to do is blame others and fight out way out?

    6. go with Sir Bors, my nephew, and Sir Urre, and they all will do you all the pleasure that they can or may, that ye shall live like a queen upon my lands.

Did he just offer her to Sir Bors and Sir Urre to be with so they can sleep with her?

    7. such kind deeds and kindness should be remembered

Just because you save peoples lives does not mean you can sleep with who ever you want specially if she is married. What happened to bros before hoes maybe this is to much of a modern concept for them.

    1. This world is most unstable, certainly; I saw, today, the corpse being carried to church Of one who, but last Monday, was at work.

This makes me think of how delicate life can be and that we should always live life to the fullest because you never know when death will knock on your door.

    2. That she her love did grant him at the last,

Well he has some serious game to change her mind so fast just by crying. She went form get your hands off of me to I promise to give my self to you.

    3. Do take your hands away, for courtesy!”

This does not sound like a fast reaction to the situation. She let it go on quite some time. Maybe she was thinking about his offer before she decided to reject him.

    1. He could steal corn and three times charge his fee; 565 And yet indeed he had a thumb of gold.

I found two meanings to this. I guess he is one of the more honest thief's. a. It means that the millers are generally known to be dishonest in weighing the flour, so they use their hands to cheat their customers to increase their profits, so it is ironically used to say: “There is no such thing as an honest miller”. OR: b. It means: An honest miller is blessed because of his honesty that he can be rich and make a lot of money from his work. However, what I understood from Chaucer’s words is that he clearly uses the common saying “An honest miller hath a golden thumb” to express the first, ironic meaning which indicates that the Miller’s golden thumb helps him to increase his own profits

    2. To speak of medicine and surgery; For he was instructed in astronomy.

Don't know how these are related or how one could have helped with the other but it must have been impressive for him to be so well known.

    3. assize

    4. This worthy man kept all his wits well set;

He is a savvy man with a lot in his mind but yet a mystery because he kept to him self and he did not share all his secrets.

    1. Thus can I preach against that self-same vice Which I indulge, and that is avarice.

He is implying he is above citizens because they cant deal with greed like he can

    1. My husband he shall have it, eve and morrow, When he’s pleased to come forth and pay his debt. 160 I’ll not delay, a husband I will get

She enjoys having sex so much that she will please her husband when ever he wants. Time or moment will not matter. I wonder what she expects as payments for her job well done?

  3. Feb 2019
    1. When my good husband from the world is gone, Some Christian man shall marry me anon;

Do you think she will keep on marrying men the rest of her life? It doesn't sound like she is going to stop any time soon.

    1. and lingered there long, to look when he wakened. The lord lay low, lurked a full long while,

I don't understand this transition for the author. He goes form shocking not so shocking affair to the lord laying low and lurking. I had to reread this a couple time because O thought the lord caught them in bed.

    2. What screaming and bleeding, by banks they lay dying, and ever the hounds in a rush hard on them followed,

This paints such a tragic death for the hunted animals. If I had to kill my food I think I would just end up being a vegetarian.

    3. swiftly they were stayed by the beaters

Are they beating the animals to death?

beaters definition a person employed to flush out or drive game animals for shooting by striking

    1. had he been able, and his lady wished

If they love each other so much why can't he stay. She cant say that he wants him to stay and but also say he can never see her again that is just nonsense. My conclusion right now is she married.

    2. baron

a member of the lowest order of the British nobility. The term “Baron” is not used as a form of address in Britain, barons usually being referred to as “Lord.”.

    1. .

I found this story in general a little boring and hard to follow. I lost interest after the first paragraph since I knew what was going to happen. That made it difficult for me to want to keep reading. I found the characters a little dumb and at some points I felt like the story was going in circles and their deaths were really stretched out. They say that a very fine line its a fine love between love and hate.

    1. .

For me part 3 has harder to follow. It seemed to me that we had stories within the story and that made it difficult. I was able to relatable because Beowulf at times seemed more human than in the prior stories. In this one he ages, feels fear, and unfortunately meets death as all mortals do someday. It gives more content that one can relate to. It showed me that it might seem silly to others and even foolish but age is but a number and if you believe in something you cant let your age determine weather you move forward or not.

    2. He would dart before daybreak, to hide in his den.

The author comments again on how the dragon can not be out during the day. Could this be when he is the weakest.

    3. then back in he’d go In search of the cup

The author using anthropomorphism in this line. Giving the dragon the ability to keep inventory of his treasure allowing him to know that he is missing but a single cup.

    4. to guard heathen gold

Why is the dragon guarding this treasure? Did he find it and claim it for him self or was this a task given to him long ago and his master never returned?
