    1. small-scale coral fragment transplantation

A small-scale coral fragment transplantation is a coral restoration technique that involves transplanting small pieces of coral to degraded reefs

    1. and

Apicomplexan parasites are obligate intracellular protozoan organisms which, depending on the species, are able to invade a wide range of different host cells.

    2. gregarine parasites rather than to coccidians.

The difference between these two parasites is that gregarine parasites are typically large, extracellular parasites found in invertebrates, while coccidians are smaller, intracellular parasites that primarily infect vertebrates.

    1. The general lesson is that spatial heterogeneity may be more important for predation dynamics than is at first apparent, particularly for terrestrial mammalian systems.

This was a really cool study/experiment I enjoyed reading it. I've never really heard about heterogeneity before so this was new for me to learn about!

    2. We classified moose as being in senescent condition if they exhibited signs of senescent-associated pathologies

I had no idea what senescent meant but when I looked it up it means something that has aged or a state of being old.

    1. physiographic elements

This means the physical features of the earth's surface, I have never seen this word before!

    2. sequestration

Sequestration is the process by which living organisms and ecosystems store carbon dioxide in the environment. I haven't heard this term used very much so I had to search the definition.

    1. However, even when no sexual dimorphism in teeth exists, they are often employed in aggressive intra- and interspecific interactions.

Sexual dimorphism simply means the systematic way to tell the difference between individuals of different sex within the same species. So how shapes and sizes can determine which animal is a male or female.

    2. Walruses (Odobenus rosmarus) use their tusks for hauling themselves onto ice-shelves (Fay 1982). Elephants, pigs, and other large animals with tusks likely commonly use their tusks to force their way through forested environments (Shoshani 1978; MacKinnon 1981)

What makes tusks so strong and powerful is the fact that they are made with dentine which is a very hard, dense, bony tissue. The whole tusk is wrapped in enamel, the hardest animal tissue.

    3. hypermineralized structures,

The cause of hypermineralized structures is when a disturbance in the tooth is caused during development which could be during the "pregnancy" or first couple years of life.

    1. reduced biodiversity

Reduced biodiversity simply means that there is a loss or decrease of the variety of life on Earth. This could mean extinction of a species or just a dramatic loss of numbers in a species.

    2. carbon sequestration

Carbon sequestration is a natural or artificial process in which carbon dioxide is removed from the atmosphere and held in solid or liquid form.
