    1. Deor was my name. For years I enjoyed     my duties as minstrel and that lord’s favor,     but now the freehold and land titles     he bestowed upon me once he has vested in Heorrenda,     master of verse-craft.

      Deor, the person who the poem is supposed to be about, up in the air really if he was the one to write this or not, was an entertainer and enjoyed his job for the lord, but now he feels as if he has no purpose

      This Marginalia written by a person who the narrator thinks is a beautiful girl has used this book as an escape (escapism) and in doing so she has accidentally sweared egg salad in the book

    1. Touch the wooden gate in the wall you never saw before.

      While these "instructions" seem to be set in a fantasy world that is covered in mythological creatures, it certainly doesn't end there. The "instructions" given while might seem a bit bizarre is nothing more but metaphors for real life, the poem is giving the reader instructions to be adventurous in real life, to be brave and fearless. The hero in this story is actually the reader.
