Being a teacher is being a leader. We need to hold the mirror up to ourselves and continuously reflect on our bias.
And the final point, essentially, is about everybody taking responsibility for this
Playing the blame game should be avoided and we should share the blame in this issue. Nobody is 100% fair all the time.
My act was unconscious, but also it was not random
Most of the time we aren't purposely doing these bias acts, they are unconscious and maybe if we take a closer look to how we behave we won't be in denial in confronting our own bias.
So what can we do? Well, one of the things that we can do is actually turn the mirror on ourselves. Instead of thinking that bias is somebody else's problem, which is what we tend to do, it's actually a problem for me
Being able to look in the mirror and realize your own bias, and how you stereotype people and situations is so difficult but it should be done.
And priming are the ways in which we can be influenced without realizing that we have been influenced.
We have been primed since we were born. From our parents, our teachers, our environment and friends. It is inevitable but how can we create more positive ways of priming people, especially students!
So in interviews, for example, we know that untrained interviewers will make their minds up about a candidate within the first two minutes.
Being in second year, we are continuously being told how to behave and how we should portray ourselves in interviews to "get a job". When a lot of it has to do with bias... which is something we should be addressing.
We could never change their gender or their color without the other person noticing.
We are always so busy focusing on someones gender and skin color, when a lot of time that has no pertinence in what is happening. When we focus solely on that we build certain expectations and judgments.
7 billion people have bias of some shape or form.
A lot of times our bias comes from other people, our family members and what has been said and told by the people around us. Which is why we are constantly exposed to it and why 7 billion people have it in one way or another
My name's not Tandoori, it's Kandola. It's chicken Kandola.
Sometimes we feel that we need to use humour to confront others, even when we do feel very offended. Especially when it comes to race, social class and religion.
