    1. “this self evident truth that all men are created equal, and that they have certain inalienable rights among which are, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” It is even a greater absurdity to suppose a man can be legally born a slave under our free Republican Government, than under the petty despotisms of barbarian Africa. If then, we have no right to enslave an African, surely we can have none to enslave an American;

      She uses logic to make her case for her. basically saying if we cannot capture and import slaves abroad which references 1808, than how can one who claims to live in a country founded on principle of equality for all men state that people born here can be considered slaves

    2. Slavery must be attacked with the whole power of truth and the sword of the spirit. You must take it up on Christian ground, and fight against it with Christian weapons, whilst your feet are shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace. And you are now loudly called upon by the cries of the widow and the orphan, to arise and gird yourselves for this great moral conflict, with the whole armour of righteousness upon the right hand and on the left.

      She uses the Christian concept of the full armor of God from Ephesians 6 to empower women to use their God given protections, the only actual weapon from that passage is a sword that stands for Gods word. She is not inciting the women to commit acts of civil disobedience but rather as Christians appeal to God and use his word to fight this battle in a non violent way.

    3. I am going to tell you unwelcome truths, but I mean to speak those truths in love, and remember Solomon says, “faithful are the wounds of a friend.” I do not believe the time has yet come when Christian women “will not endure sound doctrine,” even on the subject of Slavery, if it is spoken to them in tenderness and love, therefore I now address you.

      I really like how she did this. She did not fly at her audience with self righteous anger, but instead put herself in the position of the bearer of bad news. She doesn't insult her readers but instead speaks to them respectfully as equals with common sense.

    1. —and he ceased from his wickedness, and was attacked immediately with a cutaneous eruption, and blood oozed from the pores of his skin

      I find the medical terminology used here interesting. Most people do not use the word cutaneous when they are addressing the skin, I have to wonder was this man highly educated or was the person taking the account adding in his own words?

    1. We know not who they are, or in what seats they sit, or what thoughts they now have: it may be they are now at ease, and hear all these things without much disturbance, and are now flattering themselves that they are not the persons, promising themselves that they shall escape. If we knew that there was one person, and but one, in the whole congregation that was to be the subject of this misery, what an awful thing would it be to think of! If we knew who it was, what an awful sight would it be to see such a person!

      Planting seeds of doubt in their personal salvation, after terrorizing them with his description of the pits of hell was brilliant on his part. I can imagine them all looking at each other as he delivered this part of the sermon wondering which one of them was going to hell.

    2. And now you have an extraordinary opportunity, a day wherein Christ has flung the door of mercy wide open, and stands in the door calling and crying with a loud voice to poor sinners; a day wherein many are flocking to him, and pressing into the kingdom of God; many are daily coming from the east, west, north and south; many that were very lately in the same miserable condition that you are in, are in now an happy state, with their hearts filled with love to him that has loved them and washed them from their sins in his own blood, and rejoicing in hope of the glory of God. How awful is it to be left behind at such a day

      I don't see how people could not want to be converted after hearing all this. Terrorizing people into seeking the safety of Christ after scaring them to death and then making them seriously question where they stand must have had them rushing the alter. This is so commonly used now, especially in southern churches that it is hard to imagine what it must have been like to have been the first church goers on the receiving end of a fire and brimstone service.

    3. That world of misery, that lake of burning brimstone is extended abroad under you. There is the dreadful pit of the glowing flames of the wrath of God; there is hell’s wide gaping mouth open; and you have nothing to stand upon, nor anything to take hold of: there is nothing between you and hell but the air; ’tis only the power and mere pleasure of God that holds you up.

      The imagery used here is so vivid. You can literally imagine the terror of being dangled over a flaming pit with nothing to grab hold of to escape. It catches your attention and kindles real fear.
