    1.  The single story creates stereotypes, and the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete. They make one story become the only story. 

      Exactly what I was thinking. She said my thoughts perfectly. I love the way she tells the audience about a single story, and how it makes humans see certain groups a specific way. It reminds me of the stereotype that Asians are good at math. It becomes the first thing people think of when they think of Asians. It is very narrow-minded of us.

    2.  This is not because I am a better person than that student, but because of America's cultural and economic power, I had many stories of America. I had read Tyler and Updike and Steinbeck and Gaitskill. I did not have a single story of America. 

      In America, there are many books being written in different perspectives, both good and bad. It is interesting to literature in this respect because it makes sense that since there are so many stories in America, people don't see it one certain way. But in places like Africa, most books that are written are written in a negative light, creating this single story.

    3.  In this single story, there was no possibility of Africans being similar to her in any way, no possibility of feelings more complex than pity, no possibility of a connection as human equals. 

      The way she words helps me to understand the point she is getting at. When humans see something from one perspective and are narrow-minded. Many people associate Africa with this "single story", and it creates a terrible stereotype.

    4.  So what the discovery of African writers did for me was this: It saved me from having a single story of what books are. 

      Previously, she had a very narrow view of literature because she was not exposed to other types of stories. It is sad that the only books available to her were about things she couldn't relate with. Having discovered books written by African writers, she could see that books are not just people with white skin and blue eyes.
