    1. A stat mentioned that caught my eye was the average time employers read a cover letter is two seconds. That proves why it is important to differentiate yourself from others.

This stat also caught my attention during class, because I would have guessed that employers would take at least five minutes to thoroughly read peoples cover letters.

    1. I also thought this movie was going to be about a love story of pen pals.

I also thought that this movie was going to be about a love story at first. I also like the point you made, saying that Frank and Helene not meeting made it more personal.

    1. Some of my favorites were to not blindly repeat your resume, to have a unique cover letter for each specific job, to be simple and straightforward, and to highlight your strengths instead of our weaknesses.

I like these tips for writing a good cover letter! It is important that we do not repeat everything in our resume and that we stay specific to our strengths for that specific job.

    1. Keep it under one page.

I will ensure to keep my cover letter concise.

    2. The No. 1 mistake people make with cover letters is that they simply use them to summarize their résumé.

This is a good reminder not to waste space by repeating what’s already in my resume. I’ll focus on adding new information in my cover letters, such as qualities that make me a great fit for the role, rather than just listing skills.

    1. Keep it short and sweet: There are always exceptions to the rule, but in general, for resumes and cover letters alike, don’t go over a page. (Check out these tips for cutting down your cover letter.)

I will make sure to keep my cover letters brief. I know now that hiring managers don’t have much time, so I’ll make every sentence count and avoid lengthy explanations.

    2. While it’s OK to recycle a few strong sentences and phrases from one cover letter to the next, don’t even think about sending out a 100% generic letter. “Dear Hiring Manager, I am excited to apply to the open position at your company” is an immediate signal to recruiters and hiring managers that you’re mass-applying to every job listing that pops up on LinkedIn.

This makes sense—each cover letter should show my specific interest in the job. In future applications, I’ll make sure to customize my letters, mentioning the company and role to show that I’m genuinely interested and have done my research.

    3. Done well, a cover letter gives you the chance to speak directly to how your skills and experience line up with the specific job you’re pursuing.

I would definitely use this as a reminder to always connect my experiences to the job I’m applying for. In the future, I’ll make sure my cover letters clearly show how my skills match the job description, making it easy for employers to see why I’d be a good fit.

    1. So, I’m taking a class called New Testament, which involves reading passages from the Bible, learning about the historical context behind it, and making claims from it. Where am I going with this? Well, the Bible does have a lot of epistles, another word for letters. Do you see where I’m going with this? Yes, it’s official, I’m writing Bible fanfiction.

I found it funny that you called it bible fanfiction! I like how you are connecting this class to another class you are taking! I am excited to read about this as a Jewish person, because I have always been interested in learning about other religions.

    1. I wanna learn more about how communication evolved over time.

This is so interesting! I researched a lot about love letters throughout this course, and I never thought to research how communication evolved over time. This is a cool topic, excited to read it!

    1. I would like to learn how people started becoming Pen Pals because a lot of people have different stories, and I want to read letters that are comedic and interesting to me.

I like this idea about learning about how people become pen pals! I was very interested when I learned about how random pen pals ended up getting married after sending letters back and forth. Cool idea!

    1. “I respectfully remind you sir, that we have been the most patient of all people.”

I like how you mentioned these words of Jackie Robinson. It really emphasizes his quiet but powerful determination, as he states that patience is necessary, especially it times where progress seems to be slow.

    1. While the implications of these actions were unpleasant and illegal, she gained a new sense of enthusiasm and passion for writing these letters

I appreciate the way you contrasted this idea in words. It was interesting to see how she finally felt valued as a writer, even through such illegal actions.

    1. “I thank you for what you have done so far, but it is not how much has been done, but how much more there is to do”.

I like how you mentioned this quote by Jackie Robinson. It really highlights the determined mindset that Robinson had, showing that he was always focused on progress and future achievements, and not just past milestones.

    1. He also mentions how Jewish people are distrustful and the universal scapegoat, but he still loves Max.

It is interesting how you noted that Martin calls Jewish people 'the universal scapegoat' but still claims to love Max. It shows the contradiction in his character since he has anti-Semitic views while trying to act like a friend, which makes his betrayal even more painful.

    1. The letter isn’t cold in its tone but burning hot, and it makes me think that the anonymous factor of the letter allowed the FBI to inject the full extent of their racism into the words.

It's interesting how you described the letter as 'burning hot' rather than cold, as it really emphasizes the intensity and aggressiveness of the language used. It makes it clear that the FBI wasn't just being threatening, and they were openly hostile, in their attempt to intimidate MLK.

    1. I was surprised by how isolated and lonely Caroline’s family was.

I haven’t read this short story, but this comment about Caroline’s isolation really stood out to me. It makes me curious about why her family was so cut off from others and how that affected her life.

    1. A lot happened because the letters that Jane wrote to Henry didn’t seem meaningful as she made them sound.

I totally understand what you mean here. Jane’s letters seemed like she was trying to show that she cared, but they didn’t come across as heartfelt. It makes you wonder how much their separation affected their connection.

    1. I felt oddly comforted, knowing we all shared the nervousness and fear of messing up.

I feel this way as well! I was so nervous to present, and while I still have to present in tomorrows class, knowing that our entire class feels the exact same way is comforting, and everyone did great! You were especially great at presenting and very enthusiastic and I liked how you interacted with the audience!

    1. In chapter two Chris speaks about marriage with Bessie. The most significant point I will make is his farewells and his tone. In almost every letter Chris tells Bessie he loves her before he ends his letter. In every single letter Chris expresses his genuine interest love and passion for Bessie. He uses words like “my dearest” or “my love” or “my Bessie” or “my girl” and saying “I love you”. In every letter you can feel how much he cared and loved Bessie. The couple were planning marriage. But there were going to be challenges like not being able to actually see each other, bombs, enemy capture, illness, comical misunderstandings, disapproval from friends, fear of the censor. Bessie and Chris would have to account for every possible hardship in pursuing their relationship.

I completely agree with your interpretation of Chris' letters to Bessie. His consistent use of this type of diction shows how deeply he cared for her, even during the time of a world war.

    1. Not all partners felt the same way about each other though. Many soldiers received “Dear John” or “Dear Jane” letters. These were breakup letters sent to men and women in the war. Some soldiers were heartbroken, as expected, but others sort of knew it was bound to happen and left it as it was.

I like how you point out the difference in emotional responses through letters. This adds depth to the understanding that not everyone experienced heartbreak in the same way.

    1. Many soldiers kept their letters sweet and decided not put any gruesome information in their letters to protect their families from worrying.

This is a very powerful observation, which highlights the emotional care that soldiers had to protect their loved ones.

    1. The students fighting sent photographs in their letters and write captions on the back explaining them

This is a great detail that brings the letter to life, showing the personal connection between the soldiers and their families. One area of improvement is that you could expand more on the first point to explain what the Navy training unit meant for the college at the time. This could add more historical context. Great work, this was very interesting to read!

    1. The letters give us insight into how women grew as individuals during this war and their important contributions to the war effort.

This topic is so fascinating, it is great that you chose to go into depth about women during this time. People do not talk enough about women or people of color during this time, so I am particularly excited to learn about what research you find about women of color during this time.

    1. That was about a Jewish family who lived in Greece and part of said family was taken to a ghetto in Thessaloniki.

I find it super interesting that you chose to write specifically about the experiences of individuals living in Greece during WWII. It is surprising to hear that people were also taken away to ghettos in Greece, since I read multiple letters recently of similar things happening near Poland.

    1. I am finishing my letter. Many kisses. I am going with confidence that you will grow up and be a good, healthy and smart girl.

This expresses the despair of Ida, realizing that her hopes of reunion with her sister Clara may never be fulfilled.

    1. Communication: News & Censorshi

key point: During WWII, news was tightly controlled by the government, which focused on positive stories and censored the harsh reality of war.
