    1. The weird and the noveltiesDon't ever change

This also highlights the criticism from others and how he needed his mothers reassurance to not change his style of singing according to the critics and to just be himself.

    2. Stay up on that rise and never come down

This another refrain in the song which shows that nothing is going to bring him down. The repetition shows this is a key phrase or mindset to him that helped him not be affected by his many criticisms and haters. This makes me reflect on the theme of Persistence and how you should not let others stop you from doing what you do.

    3. Had to have high, high hopes for a living

This phrase is a refrain throughout the whole song which is the lit device of repetition. This shows that this phrase was probably always playing or repeating in Brandon's head to encourage himself and that it was a very important phrase to him and that it helped him overcome his challenges while trying to reach his goals. This phrase also has alliteration of the "H" sound is in a relaxing tone which may have helped him calm down or remind himself of the goals that he wants to reach and is to also encourage the listener of this song. This makes me reflect on the theme of hope and how powerful of a force it can be.

    4. Fulfill the prophecyBe something greater

A prophecy is a prediction of something in the future so this is signifying his dream and prediction of what he wants to do and become. This is also what is mother is telling him which implies that she supports his career choices and the phrase "be something greater" shows that she wants him to become something much bigger and improve himself. This makes me reflect on the time i convinced myself to try and improve at everything i am doing and becoming a better version of myself

This metaphor is describing the many ups and downs of Brandon's career that there are many ups that are historic to him thats why he describes them as being in a museum

    6. It's uphill for oddities

This is a metaphor of Brandon's unique singing style which is signified by the word oddities. This describes how many people see his singing as too loud and annoying. The word uphill shows him struggling with all the criticism he receives from others and how he has to fight against them and not let these criticism slow him down. This makes me empathise with him and makes me recount the criticism i have also received which made me feel discouraged many times

    7. Burn your biographies

This phrase is Brandon turning away from the normal course of someone's life as society expects people to have a normal job and the burning of this mentality is what Brandon wans to do to be a songwriter which is not someone's average job and breaking the norm. This makes me reflect on the theme of individuality and how we should not let others decide on what we want to do in life. This also ties into an earlier line "one in a million" which also shows that everyone is unique and have different goals is ph

    8. I was gonna be that one in a million

This is an idiom used to signify almost impossible odds and signifies that it is very unlikely to happen. This is describing how Brandon might have felt how impossible him reaching his goals were. This could be due too the many songwriters rising at the time and competition with other bigger, bands and he felt that the odds were against him but he kept on pushing and finally made his way to the top, overcoming all the odds and let himself known. This makes me reflect on the theme of underdogs and how brandon felt smaller and outmatched by the odds but pressed on, until he reached his goals. This reminds me of a time that i had an assignment in tuition and i did not think that i could score higher than my higher level peers. But i pulled through and got highest in class. I understand the feeling of the odds being stacked up against you and empathise with him.

    9. Didn't know how but I always had a feeling

This shows that Brandon was unsure about the journey and his method to try and achieve his goals and dreams but he was always sure that he was going to reach his goals. This can be seen from the word "feeling" which shows how mentally he was very focused on his goals which ties into the song's overall themes of not giving up and not backing down until you reach your goals. This makes me feel very motivated to learn from brandon and to be able to not let other things hinder me when im working towards something.

    10. Didn't have a dime but I always had a vision

This line is describing how the Brandon did not have any money but he still had a clear idea of what he wanted to do. This is seen from the use of referencing a dime which is the American currency equivalent of a 10 cent coin which further shows that even when he did not even have a small sum of money, he always had his hopes high and did not let his financial difficulties stop him from reaching his goals. This is further shown from the use of the word "vision" which means planning for the future. Which means that Brandon had already planned ahead what he wanted to do even though he did not have any money. This makes me feel encouraged that even if I things do not look good, i will never give up until i reach my goal. This makes me reflect on the theme of perseverance and to not let other things affect you while trying to reach your goals.

    11. Shooting for the stars when I couldn't make a killing

This line is describing how he kept his hopes high even though his real life situation was not really good. The metaphor of "shooting for the stars" this shows that he was aiming high as the stars are very high in the sky and he did not let material things like money slow him down or discourage him from trying to reach his goals. This makes me feel happy that he did not let menial things stop him down. This makes me reflect on the theme of resilience and persistence and to not give up which is reflected throughout the whole song.

    1. I lost my mother’s watch.

This makes me think of the lit device of symbolism as this watch might have been really important to the speaker as it might have been a parting gift from her mother and might symbolised her mothers life and it is specifically s watch which might symbolise the time that that has past from her loosing her mother and her loosing the watch might symbolise her loosing track of time of her grief and the bad things that has happened to her. This makes me feel sympathy for the speaker as loosing someone can flip your entire world upside and can affect you for a long time. This makes me reflect on the theme of loss and how it can affect someone or can make someone stronger.

    2. None of these will bring disaster.

This is word intensity as these words seem to be in a more serious tone than the others this may have shown the writer reprimanding who she is addressing that she should not feel anything for these things and this can be seen from the word "none" as it is an extreme word and shows that she should not be affected and none of it should affect her badly and show her intensity about people feeling grief as she has had bad experiences with grief and does not want others to be like her or got through what she had gone through. This makes me reflect on the theme of helping others and shows that even though she is a broken person, she does not want others to be like her. This makes me feel hopeful that she could make good out of her situation.

    3. I lost two cities, lovely ones. And, vaster, some realms I owned

This is a metaphor as the things she listed might be people she lost that were so important to her that she describes them using large landscapes such as " two cities and "some realms" this shows how important they were to her as these things are regarded as huge or precious and shows how highly she regarded these people. This makes me reflect on the theme of love and even if we cannot see it, people might regard us highly in their heart. This makes me feel pity as she lost someone that was very important to her.

    4. The art of losing isn’t hard to master

This makes me reflect on the theme of tone as losing someone is not easy to master so she is using sarcasm implying that she has gone through so much grief and mourning that she has mastered it as seen from "master" showing that she has experienced enough of the "Art of grief" that she has mastered it. This makes me reflect on the theme of overexposure and that sometimes it can help people cope with it but too much would make someone numb to it and i feel worried for the speaker as she might become unempathetic towards others who have gone through similar experiences to her causing her to develop bad social skills as she can't empathise with them.

    5. Lose something every day. Accept the fluster

This quote shows that the speaker has come to terms with her loosing loved ones day in and day out. this can be seen from "accept the fluster" this shows that she is accepting the "fluster" or chaos that has happened in her life. This makes me reflect on the theme of grief and the speaker might be going through the five stages of grief and she is at the fifth stage which is acceptance. I feel pity for her as this implies that she has been grieving for long enough to pass the four stages of grief and what that does to her mental health
