    1. Children are always teaching you something. You have to learn to pay attention to the smallest, subtlest things.

When I was 8 years old I remember an adult telling me that "children don't have an opinion until they are 18." That statement was so morally offensive that I still remember it to this day. Teaching and learning are in parallel with each other, as you can't have one without the other. I believe that children have a lot to offer us, and as educators, we should acknowledge the small things because that's what makes the greatest difference.

    1. The nineteenth century lynching mob cuts off ears, toes, and fingers, strips off flesh, and distributes portions of the body as souvenirs among the crowd. If the leaders of the mob are so minded, coal-oil is poured over the body and the victim is then roasted to death.

The brutality and inhumanity demonstrated by the white slave owners reflects how little they thought of black people. The unwarranted cruelty becomes somewhat of a spectacle to the crowd. This act reminds me of the tarring and feathering of tax collectors during the American Revolution, but in this case, the black people are completely innocent and undeserving of such crimes committed against them. There is absolutely no reason for such hate to be fostered and no reason for this level of hate and atrocity to exist.

    1. Something in the place, the hours, the crackling fires, the fantastic mysteries of light and shade, made others as well as Tess enjoy being there. Nightfall, which in the frost of winter comes as a fiend and in the warmth of summer as a lover, came as a tranquillizer on this March day.

As it has been previously established, Tess and nature are synchronous. The frost of winter and the warmth of summer is a juxtaposition that represents the maliciousness of Alec, and the benevolence of Tess. Unknowingly, they are both drawn to the crackling fire, and fire is a thing that can cause mass destruction but can also cause warmth, comfort, and creation. Tess is drawn to the mystery of the flame, and the fact that she is unaware of Alec being there with her foreshadows that the light will be shed upon him.

    1. only reinforces the idea that Tess is a creature that exists for a specific use,

This describes Tess' relationship to men as though her entire existence serves solely to satisfy them. She is at their disposal and she has been discarded, by both Alec and Angel

    1. And this was the carking secret!””She had not told. At the last moment her courage had failed her; she feared his blame for not telling him sooner; and her instinct of self-preservation was stronger than her candour

Angel thinks that this is Tess' secret but it's not true because she did not reveal the full extent of her past. He is completely unaware so this could be an example of dramatic irony.
