(p.190) makes me think of the 6 degrees of separation, but on micro and macro levels, not just in relation to humans-but all components of any system

(p.188) When previously learning about mechanisms, I had come to understand that they are sort of the base or smallest level of a system- the base for processes within larger systems. Essentially, a system would be made up of a great deal of mechanisms at its core, does this follow the current logic/explanation? It sounds a bit different.
-
Interesting to think of a placebo effect as a mechanism in and of itself, as a mechanism must be ultimately effective. By definition, there has to be an explanation, but it can't be a false or pseudo action...rather the intention behind the pseudo. (p.186)

In short, scale-free networks are resilient when it comes to random deletionof nodes but highly vulnerable if hubs go down or can be targeted for attack
This gets me thinking about what constitutes the network and if there is a type of network that wouldn't be as highly vulnerable if a large hub went down. For example, if we consider the journalistic/broadcasting network where you have major hubs (NYT, Washington Post, NBC News, Fox, etc.), would it really wreak havoc? It may just be taken over by another one of the hubs. Can we think about it in this way?
But, if we talk about the individual New York Times as a network itself, then you may see more obvious havoc within that network if a large hub (VP or President or CEO) "goes down".

The originalPageRank algorithm looked only at in-links and ignored out-links
So with this thought then... a page such as Wikipedia (which is now typically at the top of your google search), or many other information tools, would not have been a primary search result with a majority of out-links
-
(If you’re reading this long after I wrote it in2008, perhaps a new search engine has become predominant.)
Ha! Not quite.

Kevin Bacon, you aren’t doing so well inyour career.
Really enjoy this example!
-
nly a few random links can generate a very large effect...onaverage, the first five random rewirings reduce the average path length of thenetwork by one-half, regardless of the size of the network.
makes me think of the large jump in percentage of forest burned, just in the change from 59% to 60% forest density- one "small" amount of additional links or connections can drastically change the output or ultimate node distance

In social networks, this corresponds to thefact that there are a lot of people with a relatively small number of friends, and a much smaller group of very popular people.
So within social media, for example say Twitter... would one's # of followers AND # of people they are following count? Does it have to be a mutual follow/follow back? Or can it be either/or, in order to count towards the degree?

when we write,somebody must read.
Or now, somebody must develop and somebody must experience (thinking of 3-D virtual worlds).
-
people who produce messages for the consumer which translate the intentions or purposes of the manager.
Or now, we create pre-populated/generated email responses and provide them to a user, which is then used to convey one's own intentions- even though they were not the creator of the message, but the selector.
-
e want to look at elements such as who is communicating, why he is communicating, and to whom he is communicating. We want to look at communication behaviors: messages which are produced, what people are trying to communicate. We want to look at style, how people treat their messages. We want to examine the means of communication, the channels
Thinking of my own work, a lot of what we want to know now is also about how someone communicates (which may be a mix of channels and styles). For example, not only are they communicating through a specific medium, but does their medium afford them to express themselves both verbally and nonverbally?

nfact, there is considerable basis for doubt as to whether they ever will be determined
Exactly. So how do we go about determining the valid ingredients then? By many static studies that lead up to the full development of the process? And then a large test of the dynamic process? Phew! Sounds like an entire career of work.
-
We need to remember that the dynamic of movement which relates the ingredients is vital. The concept of dynamic also in1plies that factors that we may overlook in any single listing of the ingredients also determine what is produced.
When trying to put my own education and training aside, this would make me think that communication should have a dynamic focus. Or even, what is truly the value of static study of isolated components of these processes when it is always part of a much larger system?
-
As any good cook knows, it is the mixing process, the blending, that makes a good cake; ingredients are necessary, but not sufficient
I like this visualization of a process and the idea of necessary, but not sufficient.
-
changing as the person who observed it changes
If applied to communication then, the process of communication would then be in the eye of the observer of the process- but then that could be varying perspectives in itself when considering multiple individuals communicating with one another. Communication is what an observer makes of it. -Makes me think of the value of self-report
-
It is not static, at rest. It is moving. The ingredients within a process interact; each affects all of the others.
This is interesting, because even though we learn about communication and study it as primarily static, we also learn about the importance of systems and understanding all of the variables or confounds that may play a role in that system or relationship.
