Between 1850 and 1940, almost 900,000 French Canadians leave Lower Canada for the United States.
Surely there must have been something either pushing French Canadians away from Lower Canada or pulling them toward the U.S. Perhaps it was both.

English deputies are opposed to the officialrecognition of French which nonetheless will be used.
Obviously French is going to be spoken in a predominantly French area like Quebec. There does not even need to be a debate about whether they should speak French or English. People generally aren't just going to give up their first language and switch solely to another one.
the Test Oath prevents Canadians (Catholics) from acceding to public office.
I do not know what made it so the Test Oath had to be put into place and prevent Canadian Catholics from acceding to public office?
Beginning of the deportation of Acadians.
I wonder why Acadians had to be deported?
Québec City is captured by the Kirke brothers and is in British hands for three years.
Does this mean the Kirke brothers and the British harshly controlled Quebec City for this amount of time?
This step back for artistic liberty is intolerable. The pressures of censors and the moral weakness of co-producers cannot have the last word when it comes to artistic freedom. Debate, yes. Support for more diversity in the arts, absolutely. Rolling back freedoms, never!”
I quite agree. Couldn't have said it better myself!
The ensuing backlash led to the remaining shows being canceled
Canceled. As they should have been. A theatrical odyssey based on slave songs? Could there be anything more offensive? Why are we making a fun "entertaining" event in the wake of something so tragic and horrifying?
We talk about human pain, experienced together. All cultures and ethnicities suffer the same.”
All cultures and ethnicities did not suffer the same, especially when it comes to slavery. For the most part white people had black slaves. There is no suffering in the way of whites when it comes to this situation. Black people did, however, suffer very much so from slavery, obviously.
Though the show uses slave songs and slavery imagery, only two out of seven actors were people of color.
Haven't only people of color been made slaves? I do not believe there has ever been a white slave as long as the Earth has existed.
During a trip to New York City, FLQ member Pierre Vallières was arrested for associating with the Black Panthers and subsequently jailed at the Manhattan House of Detention for Men.
How can someone be arrested merely for associating themselves with a certain group? I would love to know more about that. Given the Black Panthers apparently pretty violent, but still. Why arrest just one guy associated with them and not all of the Panthers?
Subban pledged to donate $10 million to a Montreal hospital without going through the Canadiens’ own charitable foundation—thus robbing the organization of the ensuing public relations bounce.
Subban's donation is generous. But, is the way he went about it perhaps negligent/ a bit of a rip off for the rest of his team?
We load our obsessions, dreams, hopes and frustrations on the back of exactly one team, and the strain must be unbearable at times.
Yes I imagine the strain could be unbearable at times. Hockey fans need to realize their players aren't perfect and their favorite team losing is not the end of the world. They should give their favorite players a chance and realize they can't be performing 100% in every game all the time. It just doesn't happen.
Subban managed to unite French and English fans.
A true success in the world of sports.
This being Montreal, and this being hockey
And we all know how Montreal is with its hockey (i.e it is a religion)
Weber, who has spent his entire professional career with the Nashville Predators, is a stay-at-home defenceman
I am not entirely certain what it means to be a "stay at home defenceman but I'm guessing it refers to always being on defense when playing and only playing games in your hometown, not going out of state to play.
Bauer's book has six chapters, one of which was written by Benoît Melançon, author of the book Les Yeux de Maurice Richard (The Eyes of Maurice Richard, which will be published in English in April 2009 as The Rocket: A Cultural History of Maurice Richard).
It's really good that Bauer has written a book related to the course he teaches. This way he is sure to be more knowledgeable on the information he teaches his students.
"If they can make connections between religion and sport, it helps get people involved; there will be a lot of diversity."
I believe hockey in Montreal (and sports in general) bring together many different people from different places. This is excellent as it promotes collaboration and the sharing of ideas that one person may not have previously thought of.
In addition to the class, Bauer has launched an essay contest asking the question, "Are the Montreal Canadiens a religion?"
I am sure many people of Montreal have poured their hearts and souls into perfecting their essays for this in order to win the competition.
"When we learned about the 100th anniversary, we thought it was a good time to talk about the relationship between sport and religion
I didn't realize sports had any connection to religion, but perhaps they do in some sense.
In Prof. Olivier Bauer's class at the Université de Montréal, worshippers can argue that their team is their religion.
I think it's a little over the top to consider a sports team a religion.
"If that was the start of the Quiet Revolution,it wasn't very quiet."
That said, why is it even called the Quiet Revolution? There's never really anything "quiet" about a revolution. The word itself means "a forcible overthrow of government or social order in favor of a new system".
Mayor Jean Drapeau telephoned Campbell at the NHL officein town and begged him not to attend the game that night.
Campbell should have heeded Jean Drapeau's warning.
Three days later Campbell suspendedRichard for the Canadiens' three remaining regular-season gamesand the entire playoffs. Montreal was aghast.
Campbell made the right call. Richard definitely deserved to be suspended with the terrible behavior he had just demonstrated. Montreal should understand that as well. No matter how loved a player, if they do not conduct themselves appropriately, there will unfortunately be consequences.
No athlete has embodied the soul of a city and the spirit of itspeople as Richard did in the 1940s and '50s in Montreal,
Richard was quite the sports spectacle, and obviously a very respected one at that.
Sportsriots have become commonplace
Can't we all just enjoy sports nicely without turning their events into riots?
In the nineteenth century, the authors and content of school textbooks were most often selected and judged in relation to the Catholic faith.
We can absolutely teach school without it being tied to any kind of faith.
He claimed that separating the two spheres would be equivalent “to placing a moral dualism in the minds of young French Canadians [...] forcing them to choose between their faith and their nationality.”
This seems a legitimate concern, but it wouldn't necessarily happen. There should be no reason anyone ever has to choose between their faith and nationality.
After visiting the Pope, who had criticized him for having made extreme nationalist remarks,
Yes, criticized him just as he should have.
He saw the literature of English-speaking North America as “the most abject expression of egotism, materialism, the worship of gold and material comfort, of real-life paganism.”
This barely makes any sense, as there are words for egotism, materialism, and real-life paganism in any language, not just English. Plus you can't classify an entire group of people as being the same exact way. That is almost never the case.
people complained that they could not pray and above all confess in their own language. By appointing a bishop of Irish descent, where it was thought possible to obtain a Francophone, Rome was making itself an accomplice of Anglo-Canadian assimilators: refusing to appoint French or French-speaking priests to some parishes was the equivalent to dooming local communities to the Anglicization process.
It seems justifiable for people to be upset about not being able to pray and confess in their own language at church. However, they ought to retain that can always speak to God (pray, confess, etc) in their heads and their God will hear them just the same. But the fact that Rome purposely appointed an Irish bishop so the French would not understand is simply not right or fair.
A long period of political instability followed which lasted until the end of the Union regime.
With all of the political issues already discussed in the article thus far, this does not come as a surprise.
Was there any hope of remaining Francophone without the help of the Catholic religion?
This kind of sounds like an outrage, as one should be able to freely speak whichever language they so choose without having to be tied to a certain religion.
The name “Canadians” now applied to all inhabitants of the new country; it was no longer reserved for the “anciens Canadiens,”
This must truly be disappointing for the anciens Canadiens, almost a sense of losing their identity.
In short, the picture was far from rosy.
I'll say! The English just continue to take over what is a heavily French land.
Not only was French not placed on an equal footing with English throughout Canada, but even in Québec, where it ought to have been predominant, the Constitution gave equal status to English, which did not take long to gain the upper hand over French.
I agree, French definitely ought to be predominant in Quebec, as most people there speak this language. It doesn't seem right for English to gain the upper hand somewhere that is predominantly French-speaking.
Teachers taught reading, writing and arithmetic.
Much like they still do today.
a general university in Québec City, with no theological teaching so as not to offend the beliefs of either the Catholics or Protestants.
There definitely should have been some type of theological teaching. If the Catholics or Protestants were to be offended, they could simply not attend the theological class.
learning reading was done in the mother tongue whereas it had previously been learnt in Latin.
This should definitely should be done in the mother tongue, and not Latin.
“There is no authority that does not come from God [...]. So much so that he who defies this authority rebels against God’s order”;this text by Saint Paul served as the basis for thevarious interventions by the religious authorities
St. Paul highly respects God and sees him as the ruler of all. Clearly, as he says no authority comes before God.
it considered the faithful to be well protected from linguistic and religious contact with Protestants.
Why do the faithful need to be protected from linguistic and religious contact from the Protestants?
Within only a few weeks, the English in Montréal broke loose. On April 25, they attacked Governor Elgin by throwing rocks and rotten eggs; that evening, they set fire to the parliament buildings.
Surely they could have expressed their anger and concern in a nicer, more justified way. But I suppose this is just how history rolls and uprisings like this are to be expected.
In the imagination of the Canadians, the feeling of belonging no longer extended far beyond the St. Lawrence Valley. In addition, the cultural link with France was virtually severed.
This is a shame, as I feel like Canadians should stay close with the French, since most Canadians also speak French as their main language.
that brought language into political debate
Why should language ever be a political debate or otherwise? I believe people should just speak whichever language they are most comfortable using. There does not need to be a quarrel over it.
Newspapers were bilingual,
How considerate of the newspapers to take into account that it would have readers from multiple backgrounds and languages.
Canadians remained a considerable majority, and it was therefore necessary to communicate with them in French!
I quite agree. Why change the official language to English when most of the residents communicate in French?
As the women and children caused us much trouble,
Were the women and children actually that much trouble or did they just not like the women and children?
The evil is, they are so attached to their old customs that, knowing the beauty of truth, they are content to approve it without embracing it.
People are often stuck in their beliefs and are very stubborn about seeing different points of view. Luckily not everyone is so close-minded.
And, if parents give the soul to their children, why do they not impart to all of them great minds, a retentive memory, and all sorts of noble and praiseworthy qualities
It is not the parents fault how and what genetics of theirs they pass onto their children.
say they have a desire to go to Heaven and fear the fiery torments of hell.
As is always thought of followers of God.
The result is that they are now bringing us children to baptize from two, three, yes, even seven leagues away.
Does this mean they believe the children to be two, three, and seven years too late to baptize? If so, why would it ever be too late? I have seen an adult baptized before.
here are a hundred souls in all who, we believe, have been rescued from the service of the devil in this country since our return.
They are being baptized to give their soul to God and keep it away from the devil. They probably also get baptized to feel cleansed and whole.
We redoubled our devotions, in which were our strongest [42] hopes, since our help could only come from Heaven
They are hoping for some assistance from God to get them through this tough time.
Those butchers, seeing that the good Father began to grow weak, made him sit down on the ground; and, one of them, taking a knife, cut off the skin covering his skull
These butchers truly are barbarians and ought to be ashamed of what they did. Shame!
But what has most delighted me is, to see that the sentiments of the Faith have so far entered these hearts, which we formerly called Barbarian, that I may truthfully say that grace has stifled in many of them the fears, the desires, the joys, and the feelings of Nature."
This proves that anyone who is thought of having a corrupt heart or no heart can easily transform through the finding of faith.
A number of Hurons come down to three Rivers and Quebec to spend the winter; they are aided by the Jesuits with food, blankets, etc.
The Hurons are most likely extremely thankful for the Jesuits generosity.
not only the priests, but their servants—are ready to lay down their lives, if need be, for the sake of the little Indian church which they have there founded.
The priests and servants are clearly very devoted to the Indian church, and would do anything to help save/protect it.
Comedians and social commentators Aba and Preach break down the casual Islamophobia from Quebec, while Dany Laferriere was empowered to do an entire TV special on the issue of racism in the late 1980s.
Comedians here in America discuss political issues in their scripts, still to this day.
By and large, the working class spoke French and the bosses spoke English until well into the 1970s.
I wonder how the working class, speaking one language, and the bosses, speaking a completely different one, communicated with one another.
‘lamb of God,’
My best guess for the meaning of this is a person of God, who is gentle and reserved.
francophones
I am now wondering why true Quebecois are referred to as francophones, and what the term even entails.
he first time my friends and I voted was in the 1995 Quebec Referendum.
The first time I voted was just a few years ago, at the community college. It was for the Trump/Clinton election.
National Assembly has the power to pass laws in areas defined as provincial jurisdiction by section 92 of the British North America Act.
This makes me think of when there is a law trying to pass in the U.S. First it is a bill and then it must go through n extensive process, which it may or may not pass, to become a law.
Québec is famous for the spectacular autumn colours of its boreal and temperate forests.
If I ever make it up to Quebec I would definitely visit this area, as I imagine the view must be simply breathtaking.
he deglaciation began only 15,000 years ago and is mainly responsible for the formation of thousands of lakes, for which the province of Québec is famous.
I always find it so interesting how over time certain things in nature can be so effected by the weather that they eventually take on a different natural form.
The province of Québec is composed of three main geological regions: the St. Lawrence River valley, the Canadian Shield and the Appalachian region. The St. Lawrence River valley is the most fertile and developed region. The majority of the population of Québec lives here, mainly between Montréal and Québec City.
Montreal is probably where I would go were I to ever visit Canada.
Québec is the largest province in Canada. Its territory represents 15.5 per cent of the surface area of Canada and totals more than 1.5 million km2.
Quebec is clearly a large part of Canada, and it must be rather important.
