A good balance in vocabulary needs to be found, I feel. You want to utilize more technical and often uncommon language in order to look formal and intellectual, but at the same time you also want to avoid looking overly pretentious or distant to your audience.
Ethos refers to the credibility of the rhetor—which can be a person or an organization. A rhetor can develop credibility in many ways. The tone of the writing and whether that tone is appropriate for the context helps build a writer’s ethos, as does the accuracy of the in-formation or the visual presentation of the rhetoric.
I get the impression that ethos is something that can both be established not just gradually over the course of the argument, but also before and after it should the rhetor choose.
