    1. As I am an honest man,

I think it is interesting here that Cassio is a man with integrity (I think) that now has a bad reputation, while Iago is a meddling backstabbing liar with a good reputation. This is probably why the word "reputation" is repeated so much here.

    2. behold what innovation 1152it makes here.

an example of how there weren't stage directions, but rather the words were written so that the actors would intuitively do what Shakespeare wanted them to do.

    1. Othello.

now, Desdemona refers to him by name, instead of by "the Moor" as she did earlier. I think this is because she is no longer in the presence of her father.

    2. I am about it, but indeed my invention comes 900from my pate as birdlime does from frieze; it plucks 901out brains and all. But my muse labors, and thus she 902is delivered: 2.1.125903 If she be fair and wise, fairness and wit; 2.1.126904The one's for use, the other useth it.

Switch from verse to prose, back to verse

    3. Come on, come on! You are pictures out of 880doors, bells in your parlors, wildcats in your 881kitchens, saints in your injuries, devils being offended, 882players in your housewifery, and housewives in your 883beds.

switch to prose -- shows that Iago is either disrespecting Emilia, or not really thinking about what he is saying, or both.

    4. expectancy 2.1.42799Of more arrivancy.

These words are definitely not supposed to rhyme, but Shakespeare made them rhyme -- is this because it is supposed to be formal language here?

    5. Othello,

again, referred to by name instead of "the Moor." I guess this makes sense because this scene is in the context of his military operations, which I believe, in this situation, he would be respected for his military prowess.

    6. Moor, Othello,

here, they refer to Othello as both the "Moor" and by name, which I believe is one of the first times he is referred to by name, as we discussed in class.

    1. Take hold on me, for my particular grief 1.3.61390Is of so floodgate and o'erbearing nature 1.3.62391That it engluts and swallows other sorrows 1.3.63392And it is still itself.

While his feelings are probably valid -- Brabantio seems to be a little over the top considering the Rhodes/Cyprus military thing that is going on currently.

    1. Mine's not an idle cause.

I do think it seems somewhat silly that Brabantio is trying to cause a stir about his daughter when there is some military crisis going on.

    2. Those are the raisèd father and his friends; 1.2.31235You were best go in.

the note says that Iago "stirred Othello to take a defensive posture." I wonder if Iago is actually mistaken here, or if he is being fake and manipulative.

    3. cable.

Before looking at the note, I thought this was supposed to be a shortened version of "capable." I wonder if there are multiple meanings to this word that I don't know of, because it seems a little out of place.
