    1. On March 12, the night before select banks reopened understricter federal guidelines

How did this influence the expectations of government in other crisis situations?

    2. “Today’s woman gets what shewants. The vote. Slim sheaths of silk to replace voluminous petticoats.Glassware in sapphire blue or glowing amber. The right to a career. Soapto match her bathroom’s color scheme.” As with so much else in the1920s, however, sex and gender were in many ways a study in contradic-tions. It was the decade of the “New Woman,” and one in which only 10percent of married women—although nearly half of unmarried women—worked outside the home.16

This shows how women gender roles transformed during this time period, shifting from the prior household and work expectations to consumerism.

    3. Mostly, however, it was the appointing of friends and close supporters, dubbed“the Ohio gang,” that led to trouble.2

This shows a shift in how the people viewed the appointing of government officials. Hardings actions raised public concern as it was seen as corrupt, but prior to this time the business of government and politics was left in the hands of the wealthy.

    4. The United States historically relied solely on traditional volunteerismto fill the ranks of the armed forces.

This statement shows how government power and control has increased over time. Prior to WWI, the government solely relied on people volunteering to be a part of the military but after the war they began drafting people for mandatory military services in times national emergency.

    5. Former Triangle worker and labor or-ganizer Rose Schneiderman said, “This is not the first time girls havebeen burned alive in this city. Every week I must learn of the untimelydeath of one of my sister workers . . . the life of men and women is socheap and property is so sacred! There are so many of us for one job, itmatters little if 140-odd are burned to death.” 4 After the fire, Triangleowners Max Blanck and Isaac Harris were brought up on manslaughtercharges. They were acquitted after less than two hours of deliberation.

The involvement of the government only after this crisis shows how little they managed business policies. After a terrible incident like this one, it raised public awareness to the issue, prompting the government to actually take action, indicating that they were fearful of the power of the public and the consequences if they ignored the issues and allowed them to continue.
