    1. Computer networks, which today offer a powerful meta-phor for thinking about the brain or human society, were notaround in that key period in the history of economic thought.Until the mid-1970s, the only computers were mainframes, referred to as “big iron.” Far larger than today’s computingdevices, and yet less powerful, computers were classified asheavy equipment

It is cool to see how something as simple as computers can make a huge impact to the economy 50 years ago and how right now they are also making a huge impact. Not only on the way we learn and research things but also how we do our day-to-day lives.

    2. Many fewer people are in the labor force with less thana high school education, and many more people have atleast some college education.

In the other passage he talks about "services" and says, "Service are tasks that one or several people preform for others: cutting hair and preparing restaurant meals, classroom instruction and brain surgery, transportation and auditing." In both passages Kling and Stanford are walking about what type of education people might need for these different jobs. Kling talks more about the education behind that job.

    1. Servicesare tasks that one or several people perform for others: cutting hair and preparingrestaurant meals, classroom instruction and brain surgery, transportationand auditing.

These "Services" are all extremely different. There is a wide spread of different jobs that require different types of education. Some cost a lot of time and money like preforming brain surgery, while others don't.

    2. Finance Most economic activity (but not all) requires money. Where dopeople get money? How is it created and controlled? Who gets to spend it?What do they spend it on

Finance is the one of the five building blocks to economics. Finance is talked a lot by both Kling and Stanford. They talk about how to effects of what one person does with their money can change for better or worse other people and the whole economy.

    1. Workers in “core” jobs (those requiring especially importantskills, or in highly productive industries) receive premium wages and benefits, and enjoy some long-term job security (though never fully guaranteed)

These are the "good workers" that he was talking about a few pages above this. The people that need to go through training and education to make more money with a higher skilled job. They are doing the schooling to "receive premium wages and benefits, and enjoy some long-term job security."

    2. Other attempts to link compensation to workeffort are even less reliable – like profit-sharing bonuses, or tips paid to restaurantwaiters. Here the link between an individual’s work effort and their personalcompensation is very indirect (since the total output of a factory, or the quality of arestaurant meal, depends on the performance of the entire organization – not justone person’s effort). Of course, if you are recognized as a “good worker” you mightget a promotion or a raise, but at best this is an indirect, long-term incentive.

The text says, "Of course, if you are recognized as a "good worker" you might get a promotion or a raise, but at best this is an indirect, long-term incentive." With this being said, there are a couple different types of workers,. One being the one that stives to work hard and be a "good worker" by earning raises and promotions. In comparison, "Most people work just hard enough not to get fired, and get paid just enough money not to quit" as George Carlin says. I agree some people care about the business and want to work hard and get promotions while others are just there for the pay check. What has caused people to care less and what they represent?
