    1. “promote the overthrow of the United States government,” “promote resentment toward a race or class of people,” “are designed primarily for pupils of a particular ethnic group” or “advocate ethnic solidarity instead of the treatment of pupils as individuals.”

This is a common argument against CRT and Ethnic Studies where people say that it teaches white students that they are evil. However, MAS and other Ethnic Studies courses do not teach that but instead they teach about the history of systemic issues and the histories of Black, Indigenous, and people of color.

    1. "[R]esults indicate that assignment to this course [ethnic studies curriculum piloted in several San Francisco high schools] increased ninth-grade student attendance by 21 percentage points, GPA by 1.4 grade points, and credits earned by 23. These surprisingly large effects are consistent with the hypothesis that the course reduced dropout rates and suggest that culturally relevant teaching, when implemented in a supportive, high-fidelity context, can provide effective support to at-risk students.

This is great to see but I'm curious as to how this changes student's motivation and feelings about school. Also, outside of these numerical increases in GPA and attendance, how does including Ethnic Studies change the way students' feelings of belongingness and inclusion at school?

    1. a model curriculum

    1. Vetoed by Governor.

It was surprising to see how much effort was put in to try and get the governor to pass the bill and for him to veto it. Especially because, after listening to the lecture, we did not have to fight this long to have science, math, and English curriculums. This then raises the question of why does Ethnic Studies cause so much pushback?
