It was not until the late 1800s that psychology became accepted as its own academic discipline. Before this time, the workings of the mind were considered under the auspices of philosophy.
This actually surprised me. I would have thought that it would have stood as its own as a science and not grouped in with philosophy. In fact it seems like the key thing should be psychology and philosophy as the subcategory.
