    1. Credo quia absurdum

"Credo quia absurdum" is a Latin phrase attributed to Tertullian, an early Christian author. It translates to "I believe because it is absurd." Tertullian used this phrase to express the idea that faith often involves believing in things that seem illogical or irrational. It highlights the paradoxical nature of faith, where belief transcends rational understanding.

    2. Civilized society has found itself obliged to passover in silence many transgressions which, according to its own rescripts, it ought to have punished. Butwe must not err on the other side and assume that, because it does not achieve all its aims, such anattitude on the part of society is entirely innocuous.

A lot of what Freud talks about contradicts itself. Do we follow all the laws or do we let life run its course. But also a lot of laws aren't made to help the majority but instead the top 10% or 1%.

    3. eople give the name'love' to the relation between a man and a woman whose genital needs have led them to found a family;but. they also give the name 'love' to the positive feelings between parents and children, and betweenthe brothers and sisters of a family, although we are obliged to describe this as 'aim-inhibited love' or'affection'. Love with an inhibited aim was in fact originally fully sensual love,

There is two types of love. Although romantic love is associated with sexual desires and the formation of a family, affection shared among family members is also considered love, albeit with a repressed or refocused goal. According to Freud, this loving relationship that exists within families is rooted in sensual love that has transformed into a more subdued form, although the sensual aspect still exists in the unconscious mind.

    4. We may characterize this process with reference to thechanges which it brings about in the familiar instinctual dispositions of human beings, to satisfy which is,after all, the economic task of our lives. A few of these instincts are used up in such a manner thatsomething appears in their place which, in an individual, we describe as a character-trait.

You can see this within different generations. For example, how boomers and gen z do not think the same as society has changed and so has different norms. It is more normal for gen Z to stay with their parents as long as they can because of factors that have changed from the boomer generation.

    5. What is the use of reducing infantile mortalitywhen it is precisely that reduction which imposes the greatest restraint on us in the begetting ofchildren, so that, taken all round, we nevertheless rear no more children than in the days before thereign of hygiene, while at the same time we have created difficult conditions for our sexual life inmarriage, and have probably worked against the beneficial effects of natural selection?

It seems in each societal trade-off that there is pros and cons to each decision. If I lower this than people will worry about that? So on and so on.

    6. It wasdiscovered that a person becomes neurotic because he cannot tolerate the amount of frustration whichsociety imposes on him in the service of its cultural ideals, and it was inferred from this that theabolition or reduction of those demands would result in a return to possibilities of happiness

To some degree I agree with what he is saying. Everyone copes with stress and calamity in their life differently. Of course if society becomes easier there would be less drastic measures used to deal with our current world.

    7. modicum

"Modicum" refers to a small amount or quantity of something, often implying that it is just enough to be considered adequate or satisfactory.

    8. contention

"Contention" typically refers to a disagreement or argument about something. It's a state of conflict or dispute between individuals or groups, often regarding differing opinions, beliefs, or interests.

    9. We do not admit it at all; we cannot see why the regulations made by ourselves shouldnot, on the contrary, be a protection and a benefit for every one of us. And yet, when we consider howunsuccessful we have been in precisely this field of prevention of suffering, a suspicion dawns on us thathere, too, a piece of unconquerable nature may lie behind -this time a piece of our own psychicalconstitution

He is saying that even though we try to make laws that will benefit society, we frequently fall short of ending suffering. He suggested that our conscious intention may be undermined by our unconscious instincts/ desires.

    1. Sometimes the motive may be a simple will topower, to victimize those marked as vulnerable by the very social fact thatthey are subject to violence.

I believe a lot of the time this crime revolves around power. When, in this instance I created, men when they feel their 'dominance' is being stripped away they are willing to some questionable things to get that back. In the case where women rape, I believe it is the since of belonging and desire. sometimes power too.

    2. Double consciousness arises when the oppressedsubject refuses to coincide with these devalued, objectified, stereotyped visions of herself or himself

In simpler terms double consciousness mean the struggle Black people have of either remaining to their true black culture or conforming to white society. Which is honestly I wonder what he thinks of the culture we have created now for ourselves.

    3. bourgeoi

      meaning middle class

    4. Women's oppression consists not merely in an inequality of status, power, and wealth resulting from men's excluding them from privileged activities.

There is even more subgroups to oppression in feminism because of the separation between white women and other races. Such as black women and other poc women also face racial oppression with this group that is supposed to aid all women.

    5. Evenwhen they belong to oppressed groups, people's group identifications areoften important to them, and they often feel a special affinity for othersin their group.

Identity is such a strong concept in societies eyes. I wondering what would be our biggest concept if we were all represented or in the same group.

    6. "There are really as many groups as there are combinations of people and if we are going to ascribe claims to equal treatment toracial, sexual, and other groups with high visibility, it will be more favoritismnot to ascrrbe similar claims to these other groups as well" (

Sher is trying to say that to give all groups the same treatment would mean not giving a group the same would be favoritism. I believe that giving all groups the same treatment would be beneficial if there wasn't already so much turmoil. With that being said most groups wouldn't benefit from this treatment as not everyone's oppression is not the same as said in earlier pages.

    7. n its new usage, oppression designatesthe disadvantage and injustice some people suffer not because a tyrannicalpower coerces them, but because of the ever yday practices of a wellintentioned liberal society.

Oppression now vs then has definitely come into change. I do feel that we have come a long way but oppression might not be the drastic term to use for all groups. Also something to think about is the sub groups of oppression such as in racial, economic, religious, and social.

    8. Beyond that, in any more specific sense, itis not possible to define a single set of criteria that describe the condition ofoppression of the above groups.

Oppression is used a a more diverse term as it doesn't mean the same to everyone that faces it. Oppression is different to each group.

    9. Many people in the United States would not choose the term "oppression" to name injustice in our society.

At first I did disagree with this when first reading but then the text went into more detail about how most injustices for minority groups or centralized on oppression. Oppression is a term that is used for most social movements unless it comes to the environment.
