      Knowing your students and what is and is not "complex" for them is very important in encouraging them to become more proficient and independent readers. This can change from class to class. I, for example, have provided different texts for different sections of the same class. This is also where Newsela can be helpful.

      We allow students to choose between these strategies on a nightly basis in our English 9 class. Many of them gravitate to one or two strategies and stick with those, so it is important to ensure that they do all of these at different times and with different texts.

      I do book talks to help motivate my students and to find texts that they are interested in outside of school.
