The final two decades of the nineteenth century saw over twenty thousand strikes and lockouts in the United States. Industrial laborers struggled to carve for themselves a piece of the prosperity lifting investors and a rapidly expanding middle class into unprecedented standards of living.
The people were struggling to live and simply survive because of the industrialization and many protesters were killed when they brought attention to the working conditions and low wages.
