    1. Wikipedia articles are written, edited, and maintained by volunteers, known as Wikipedia editors or Wikipedians, and like all sources, the quality of Wikipedia articles depends on the knowledge and skill of those creating them.

I agree with this as I've seen information change in Wikipedia overtime.

    1. But I’m here to tell you that even “articulate” Americanssound foolish to the British

I feel that she is assuming that American's English is worse than British.

    1. Some colleges have figured out how to succeed despite modest budgets.

It is good that there are some colleges that can succeed even if there are modest budgets. If every college depended on budgets all the time, then it would cause chaos.

    2. The most effective way for colleges to spend money may simply be to give it to students — not just to pay for tuition but also to cover living expenses.

When it comes to money, colleges should use it to maintain the campus. Because if they can't maintain the campus, they would facing tough times.

    3. For too long, high-school students, parents and guidance counselors have hardly thought about graduation rates when choosing a college.

I feel that high-school students and parents and guidance counselors should know some of the graduation rates when choosing a college. Because if they don't know what it is, then it can have a impact on the student's life.

    4. College matters so much because it isn’t just about book learning or the development of tangible skills.

I agree that college is important in life. Without college, how would students learn when they go to the workforce? How would they get the experience they need for it?

College helps students learn what it is like in the workforce.

    5. The chart above is based on an analysis done by The New York Times and the Urban Institute’s Center on Education Data and Policy.

When I looked at the chart, I felt intensed as there were a lot of students who did worse than they expected.

    6. But the actual graduation rate at U.N.L.V. is far lower than at Western Kentucky. In human terms, the difference amounts to about 500 more dropouts at U.N.L.V. each year.

This is very concerning as the U.N.L.V has more dropouts than Western Kentucky University. I feel that when there are more dropouts, then schools might struggle as they might not have enough students in their campus.

    1. State an author’s or a character’s main ideas concisely and briefly in your own words.

I need to work on putting information in my own words. It's because I want to make sure I have an understanding of the author's or character's main ideas.

    1. Introduce one reason/topic that relates to your thesis statement

This can be useful to me as sometimes I have trouble finding topics for my thesis statement.

    2. Statistics (polls, percentages, data from research studies)

This is similar to when I find information regarding topics. This would help me in reading and writing as I can find out if the information is accurate or not.

    1. page 259 Malcolm was set free from prison, and from then on, he would read not only in the library, but also at his bunk. I feel that people should be able to read books even if they are not in the library. They should be able to read books at home or even outside of home if they feel like it.

    2. page 258 Malcolm finds that the best thing to do was to get a hold of a dictionary and use it to study and learn some words. I feel that people should use dictionaries to learn new words as they go to higher levels as they can not only learn them, but figure out when to use and when not to use them in life.

    3. page 257 when Malcolm got frustrated because he wasn't able to express what he wanted to convey in letters that he wrote. This connects to how people write things. Sometimes people may have a hard time knowing what to write in something, so they can ask their teacher for help or figure it out by themselves.

    4. page 260, "I read more in my room than in the library itself. An inmate who was known to read a lot could check at more than the permitted maximum number of books. I preferred reading in the total isolation of my own room." I feel that reading in your room is better for reading as you have some time for yourself to do something.

    5. page 259, "I was so fascinated that I went on-I copied the dictionary's next page." Malcolm X felt passionate when he read the dictionary's first page as he got to learn new words. When he went on, he felt more passionate.

    6. On page 257, "I became increasingly frustrated at not being able to express what I wanted to convey in letters that I wrote, especially those to Mr. Elijah Muhammed," I could relate this to when there's a time when people don't know how to express themselves, even in writing.

    1. Istarted writing nonfiction as a freelancer the weekafter I was told by my boss at the time that writingwas my worst skill and I should hone my talentstovrard account management.

I think this connects to what people are majoring in college in the real world. People should figure out what skills they learned or even have before choosing their major. But some people could go Undeclared if they don't know what their major is.

    2. My mother has long realized the limitations ofher English as well. When I was a teenager, sheused to have me call people on the phone andpretend I was she. In this guise, I was forced to askfor information or even to complain and yell atpeople who had been rude to her.

This connects to what is happening in the real world. There are times when people get spam calls and when they don't answer it, sometimes the same call can come over and over, which is very annoying. I really feel that people should not be so rude when it comes to talking to people on the phone.

    3. Lately I've been giving morethought to the kind of English mymother speaks. Like others, I havedescribed it to people as "broken" or"fractured" English.

I feel that there are people in this world who struggle when it comes to English. Some people may not be able to speak properly in English as their voice might not be strong enough. When somebody is a different culture than you, it might take time for that person to learn the language you speak, and it also might take time for the other person to learn the language that person speaks.

    4. Tan's first novel. The Joy Luck Club, exploresrelationships between Chinese mothers and theirAmerican daughters.

I feel that China and the USA are both similar as some of the American names are like the Chinese names. Also, I feel the relationship between China and USA is kind of mediocre as their country is not like our country and the way we have agreements and disagreements on things.

    5. At first I wrote what I thought to be wittilycrafted sentences, sentences that would finallyprove I had mastery over the English language.

It's a good thing to practice writing in English until you can truly master it. It gives you an opportunity to learn and grow in the English language.

    6. Recently, I was made keenly aware of thedifferent Englishes I do use. I was giving a talk to alarge group of people, the same talk I had alreadygiven to half a dozen other groups

When it comes to English, people may talk in English, but they might not talk in the same accent like in the UK. But people do speak English in large groups.

    1. "If you want to be American, speak 'American.' If you don't like it, go back to Mexico where you belong."

This quote reminds me of how people are being treated. In the USA, working people are not getting equal pay because of their race. I feel that everyone should be treated fairly, no matter what language they speak. I mean, people can learn languages from others, but I really don't think it is right to tell people to go back to their country just because they can't speak the same language as others.

    2. I remember being caught speaking Spanish at recess -that was good for three licks on the knuckles with a sharp ruler.

This connects to when a black woman named Rosa Parks was sitting behind the white only sections on the bus. She refused to give her seat to the white man. But then she got arrested for not letting the white man sit on the white only section on the bus.

    3. "How to Tame a Wild Tongue" is from BorderlandsfLa Frontera. In it, Anzaldua is concerned with many kinds of borders -between nations, cultures, classes, genders, languages.

This makes me think of the real world as every nation, culture, class, gender, and language is different. But I feel that no matter what nation you live in, what your culture is, what class you identify as, what your gender is, and language you speak, everyone is created equal.

    4. For some of us, language is a homeland closer than the Southwest-for many Chicanos today live in the Midwest and the East. And because we are a complex, heterogeneous people, we speak many languages. Some of the languages we speak are: 1. Standard English 2. Working class and slang English 3. Standard Spanish 4. Standard Mexican Spanish 5. North Mexican Spanish dialect 6. Chicano Spanish (Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California have regional variations) 7. Tex-Mex 8. Pachuco (called cal6)

This relates to where people live not just in the country, but in the other parts of the world. All languages are different and unique in their own way.

    5. Attacks on one's [orm of expression with the intent to ce nsor are a violation of the First Amendment.

This reminds of the USA as the First Amendment states that everybody has the freedom of speech.

    6. "How to Tame a Wild Tongue" is from BorderlandsfLa Frontera. In it, Anzaldua is concerned with many kinds of borders -between nations, cultures, classes, genders, languages.

In this type of work, Anzaldua is referring to different kinds of borders, not just between countries. I feel that there are borders in cultures, classes, genders, and languages because they are not all the same.

    1. Building on Kohn’s assertion that students’ “purposes and interests” should inform the curriculum and classroom discussion, this textbook is also built on the premise that each reader has various skills, assets, and learning styles that may not have been rewarded or stimulated in various parts of your education.

I agree that textbooks are very useful when it comes to reading. The textbooks would have just about everything a student needs to learn.

    1. Kohn argues that questioning is how students learn best, and challenges the old school learning model, where “Students are expected to do whatever they’re told, to accommodate themselves to a curriculum that was created by adults who never met them” (3).

He is saying that students should learn in a new way instead of the old school learning model. He is also saying that students need to do as they are told, to adapt themselves to the curriculum, which was created by adults. I feel that students need to really adapt themselves in this new environment because they need to know what it is like.

    1. We would like to start this journey by first preparing you with the mindsets that will empower you to grow and learn through various college situations that you will encounter

As we prepare for college, it's very essential that everybody needs to pay attention a lot more in college. This will help people be better and more successful in life.

    1. Openness, Flexibility: Prepare your mindset to be flexible and open to new reading and writing situations in college; reinforce the growth mindset model and prepare students with strategies to control their reading and writing growth

I totally agree that people need to have an open mind when it comes to new reading and writing. This would definitely help people's minds be active more and also help them achieve milestones in life.

    1. Sometimes perhaps you don't want to be a part of me

This stood out to me because at times people don't want to have other people's abilities or characteristics. They also may not want their character either.

    1. Experimenting with different forms of English, or different languages in yourwriting

Letting students write in different forms of English or different languages in your writing is great as we can learn what is like.

    2. Interact in small groups and together writing in Shared Google Slides orDiscussion Forums on iLearn during and/or after class

This would show that communication is essential when you are in doubt or need any assistance.

    3. I highly encourage you to take your knowledge, experience, and curiosity toteach your own course, on any topic relevant to you, through the Experimental College at SFSU!

This shows me that you are letting others take ownership of themselves. I think this would be one of the values as a teacher. Letting others be responsible of themselves.
