    1. Leaders need to have vision, creativity, and perseverance. To establish a successful interdisciplinary program requires education of scientific colleagues and administrators about the potential value of interdisciplinary research.

Interdisciplinary requires a lot of work and I definitely agree that it requires vision and creativity. When designing my own major "Music Therapy" I had to open my mind to possibilities and have a vision of what I wanted.

    1. . The methods used for user-involved research appear to be similar, but the training in their use, expectations of outcomes, and use of the experience and results can be quite different. In the following table we make a first step in creating an overview of the most commonly used research methods and the generated value for the different disciplines. There is a need to better define and understand these divergences, identify pitfalls, to create the possibility to also highlight the creative and analytic opportunities of these approaches of workin

This gave me a better understanding of what they were previously discussing. I agree partially but I think they have to keep in mind that with the interdisciplinary approach it gives us the ability to understand it from all points of view.

    2. The academic world in general is most often not enthusiastic about interdisciplinarity, social scientists in academia have another bias, and they seem to find the use of their research methods for applied sciences as inferior. An ‘applied science’ version of the sociology or communication discipline for example doesn’t exist. The result is that you, once you are employed in the industrial world, are rapidly alienated from the academic world because you no longer conform to the standards of the discipline.

I don't agree with this and it makes me really sad that they say this. Just because we have the ability to see things through multiple approaches does not mean "you no longer conform to the standards of the discipline."

    3. nagement. However this type of teams is constituted because it is recognised that their varying skills and knowledge are necessary to conduct research for innovation, in the same way as labour and knowledge is divided in most other areas of human endeavour. We social scientists are concerned with interdisciplinary work involving research w

This is what I discussed in my recent post on my website. Interdisciplinary gives the ability to not limit yourself to one approach or view on a topic.

This is what I discussed in my last post on my website. It gives you the ability to see it through multiple approaches. Instead of restricting ourselves to one outlook or view.

    5. nary’ as following: Interdisciplinary is an adjective describing the interaction among two or more different

Music Therapy is very interdisciplinary as it combines, music, therapy, and psychology.

    6. rpreted. We need to better understand these divergences, identifying pitfalls, but also highlighting the creative and analytic opportunities of this approach to work

I agree with this. It is so important that we understand this approach.

    1. Moreover, interdisciplinary education helps to increase student achievement by promoting positive attitudes toward subject matter, creating curricular flexibility, and integratingrapidly changing information with increased efficienc

I really like this quote and agree with it a lot. My career field is Music Therapy. This field is very interdisciplinary combining music, therapy, and psychology. That is why I was able to create this major through Plymouth State University. I will be learning new information everyday about these three categories of music therapy. While learning them separately I will have to find the skills to connect them together. As I continue this course of "interdisciplinary studies" I develop this skill more everyday.

    2. Interdisciplinary educationallowsstudents to see differentperspectives and work in groups with the synthesisofdisciplines the ultimate goal.

I think that it is really important that you not only see the different perspectives on learning, but also learn how to work within groups. This skill is especially important once you are in the work force. As there will be times that you have to work in groups.

    3. skills and vague concepts without connectionto real-world applicationsare seen by students as irrelevant andin turn, are easily forgotten

During my four years in high school I pushed through so that I could go to college and take classes that connected to "real-world applications". I think that teachers need to dig deeper then just making their students memorize information that they soon will forget. They have to apply the information to these "real-world applications".

    1. Thus, if chance favors the prepared mind, and if preparation often involves grounding in two or more disciplines, then those who wish to speed up the growth of knowledge should promote, or at least tole

I feel as though I have already learned so much by taking interdisciplinary studies. I think it is really important that we combine things together and learn things everyday even if they don't necessarily apply to our specific major. Everything is connected in some way and in the end it can and will help us.

    1. Interdisciplinary study allows for synthesis of ideas and the synthesis of characteristics from many disciplines. At the same time it addresses students’ individual differences and helps to develop important, transferable skills.

I love this and interdisciplinary studies. It is such an amazing choice that college students are provided with. We have so many opportunities presented to us and I feel extremely lucky.

    1. For example, one with a degree in education may apply for a job with over 100 other applicants; where as maybe only 2 out of the 100 are interdisciplinary studies. From an employers view; I would must rather higher someone who knows not only how to teach, but knows information about science, English, health etc. According to Gruenwald, interdisciplinary studies and the idea of a true university that fosters open-

I think everyone should and does have some form of interdisciplinary into their major or career. Being strictly apart of one field is not reasonable in today's society. We have to broaden our knowledge.

    1. On the subject of thinking, Interdisciplinary Studies also greatly fosters the ideals of metacogniton. Metacognition is the, “awareness of your own learning and thinking process(57, Repko)”.

I agree with this a lot!

    1. The twentieth century saw the continuing development of large, complex state-wide systems of public colleges and universities, and the continued expansion of smaller, private colleges and universities. Today, there are over 3,000 colleges and universities in the United States.

Education is constantly changing and majors are becoming more diversified.

    1. This is a really good idea. I think it is important that every student have one before the end of there Senior year. A majority of assignments are put into a portal that eventually sends them off into space. This gives the student the opportunity to save their creations.

    1. This is really interesting because when it comes time to present these individual domains everyone else is learning also. It takes the individuals who are not studying that topic or who have not experienced it to move outside of what they already know.

    2. the domain and all its content are the student’s to take with them. It is, after all, their education, their intellectual development, their work. Intellectual productivity on the Web look

I think this is really helpful for students, especially today. These websites creating for the student are going to help them when in comes time to seek employment.

    1. A reform agenda must also include the creation of a balance between specialists and generalists. It is clear that we cannot abandon specializations or subspecializations or sub-subspecializations. After all, the division of labor has greatly advanced the cause of civilization. But for greater understanding, we also need generalists, trained in the humanities, sciences, and social sciences, who can help create a common discourse, a common vocabulary among the various disciplines.

It is really important to find a balance between the two. Branching off out of your major is important because it helps you form into a well balanced student. Yet you also need to be able to refer back to your major and not steer to far off the path.

    2. After all, political empowerment and economic opportunity stem from the same root: the spread of knowledge. Thomas Jefferson fervently believed that a nation cannot be ignorant and free; I share this view as well as Jefferson's optimism that societies become more democratic as citizens become more knowledgeable and cultured.

If you want opportunities and you want knowledge you have to go to school to get a good degree.

    3. Higher education has atomized knowledge by dividing it into disciplines, subdisciplines, and sub-subdisciplines -- breaking it up into smaller and smaller unconnected fragments of academic specialization, even as the world looks to colleges for help in integrating and synthesizing the exponential increases in information brought about by technological advances.

I agree with this statement. I think it is important that when creating classes and majors students have to be aware. They have to refer back to there specific major. Making sure that they stay inside the lines of it and to not stray away from it. It is also important that the Universities or Colleges help guide these students and raise awareness of this.
