    1. they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one

This reminds me of two specific verses: "Seek ye first the kingdom of God." and "Thy kingdom come, thy will be done."

    2. by a man

It seems like Paul is talking about Jesus here, and if so, stating that Jesus was a man who was appointed by God takes some of the deity and divinity out of Jesus

    3. While God has overlooked the times of human ignorance, now he commands all people everywhere to repent

Overlooked human ignorance? Like how God overlooked human ignorance and didn't flood the entire world? It doesn't seem that God overlooks human ignorance, but always requires people to repent.

    4. “In him we live and move and have our being”

In the JANT, it says that who Paul is quoting is unknown, but "resembles the writing of Posidonius" (234). Is Paul quoting a known author so that the Athenians can relate to something that they know? Or is he appealing to their intellect? I find it interesting to see how often the New Testament writers draw on other authors for inspiration.

    1. for you have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband.

Eric, I appreciated what you said about this in your lecture this week. I always heard that it was because she was having affairs and divorced. It is good to hear that it could be because of following Jewish law in which you are to marry you husband's brother after your husband dies, and that she may have had fertility issues. In that case, her "thirst" would have been something completely different than a "thirst" for forgiveness.

    2. Woman

I hate this term anyway... seems like a man trying to put a woman in her place... but this just seems so calloused because of the way he is talking to his mother. It makes me want to grab Jesus by the ear and say, "Don't talk to your mom that way!"

    1. with you I am well pleased

I am always interested in God the Father telling Jesus that "in him he is well pleased." What has Jesus done to this point to receive this praise? It is in a general, "I love you and you make me happy" type of way? Or is it because Jesus has been baptized? Or is there something that we don't know about? And does Jesus really need the praise... shouldn't he already know it?

    2. led up by the Spirit

In the JANT, "Led by the spirit suggests God destined the temptation." I don't like to think of God being the one that leads us into temptation, but that is what this suggests.

    3. And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my Son, the Beloved,* with whom I am well pleased.’

"A voice from heaven" makes you believe that this was an actual audible voice that was heard by all who were gathered there, not just something spoken just so Jesus could hear. Points to Jesus' being identified as God's Son as he begins his ministry. Yet, why the push for secrecy later?

    4. drove him out

"Drove him out" seems so harsh... aren't demons driven out? I wonder why the harshness of the phrasing? In my CEB study Bible, the wording is "forced out". Again, very harsh wording.

    1. Then Jesus began to say to them, ‘Beware that no one leads you astray. 6Many will come in my name and say, “I am he!”* and they will lead many astray. 7When you hear of wars and rumours of wars, do not be alarmed; this must take place, but the end is still to come. 8For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. This is but the beginning of the birth pangs.

Sounds very much like 1 Thessalonians 4 and 5

    2. Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see that the kingdom of God has come with* power.’

I wonder if this thought is based on the end of the world eschatology that was the mindset of many during this time, or if the kingdom of God looks very different than what we think.
