    1. ests, "the Charlie Chan character became institutionalized as the nonthreatening Asian (read: a physical wimp, a sexual deviant, and a political yes-man)."20 Indeed, while Chan's expertise as a detective may be theresult of his "Chinese" understanding of human nature, his appeal to Americanaudiences was the fact that he was a polite, soft-spoken, well-groomed, familyman who had adopted middle-class, American v

I think that it is kind of interesting that if you fall into the categories of being well groomed and polite then you could be seen as a stereotype. while I feel that while we shouldnt be restrained into any type of role or stereotype I also feel that it is strange to say that doing certain things someone does out of free will will make you a stereotype or almost like a traitor to your origins.

    2. e aim of this paper isnot to debate whether or not the Asian detective played in "yellowface" by whiteactors is a racist caricature as that has been explored thoroughly in AsianAmerican studies scholarship.

I find it kind of strange that Hollywood films of the time decided for the most part to use yellow face instead of just getting an asian actor. I get that because of racism that they might not want to use asian people but why would they have any interest in asian stories? It wasnt like people back then thought that yellow face was actually close to looking like an actual asian person.

    1. Huyssen suggests that the tension that arises in the cultural mediation ofmemory is the source of artistic engagement with the past I would push hispoint further to argue that it is precisely the instability of memory that provides for its importance in pointing to the meaning of the past.

I though that the idea that because memory is volatile and so unreliable that it works almost better in a way for the making of art was really interesting. I guess that in terms of making any type of art based on historical events in which many of the people who lived through it are gone or don't remember makes the art even more important. Without artists doing things to force us to remember traumatic events in our history we might forget what impact it had on a human level. The instability of memory is why recording this certain part of these peoples experiences is really important.
